Damon Johnson Lynyrd Skynyrd
Thin Lizzy guitarist Johnson newly talked to Ultimate Classic Rock and reflected on joining Lynyrd Skynyrd to replace Gary Rossington temporarily. Lynyrd Skynyrd was an American rock band started in Jacksonville, Florida. The group was initially started as My Backyard in 1964 and comprised Gary Rossington (guitar), Larry Junstrom (bass guitar), Ronnie Van Zant (lead vocalist), Allen Collins (guitar), and Bob Burns (drums).
The band spent five years voyaging small venues under different names and with several lineup changes before choosing “Lynyrd Skynyrd” in 1969. The band released its first album in 1973, having settled on a lineup that included bassist Leon Wilkeson, keyboardist Billy Powell and guitarist Ed King. Burns left and was replaced by Artimus Pyle in 1974. King left in 1975 and was replaced by Steve Gaines in 1976.
However, at the height of their fame in the 1970s, the band popularized the Southern rock genre with songs such as “Sweet Home Alabama” and “Free Bird”. After releasing five studio albums and one live album, the band’s career was abruptly halted on October 20, 1977, when their chartered airplane crashed, killing Steve Gaines, Van Zant, and backup singer Cassie Gaines, and seriously injuring the rest of the band.
Damon Johnson Brother Cane
It was Brother Cane that would bring Johnson genuine national celebrity. The band released three albums on Virgin Records that would yield three #1 singles on rock radio (“And Fools Shine On”, “Got No Shame”, and “I Lie in the Bed I Make”). “And Fools Shine On” was also featured in the horror film Halloween: The Curse of Michael Myers.
Brother Cane also toured broadly as a headliner and also as a supporting act on tours by Van Halen, Lynyrd Skynyrd, Candlebox, Aerosmith, and Robert Plant. After what Virgin Records thought was an inferior yield for record sales, the band was released from their contract and amicably disbanded in 1998. In 2005, Brother Cane reunited to achieve two shows and performed again in 2012.
