Dan Gladden Major League Baseball Player
He was known as “The Dazzle Man” and attended California State University, Fresno before being signed as an amateur free agent by the San Francisco Giants in 1979.
He made his debut with the Giants in 1983, and as the Giants’ center fielder in 1984, he batted.351 with 31 stolen bases. Gladden was traded to the Minnesota Twins in 1987 and won the World Series with them in his first year.
He hit the first grand slam in a World Series game in 17 years in Game 1. He would earn his second World Series ring with the Twins in 1991, when they defeated the Atlanta Braves in what is sometimes referred to as the greatest World Series ever played.
In the bottom of the 10th inning of the 1991 World Series, Gladden stretched a broken-bat bloop hit into a double before scoring the winning run on Gene Larkin’s single off Atlanta’s Alejandro Pea. Gladden signed as a free agent with the Detroit Tigers after the 1991 season and stayed with them until 1993.
He spent 1994 in Japan with the Yomiuri Giants, where he won the Japan Series. Because of the 1994-95 MLBPA strike, some fans consider Gladden’s championship with the kyojin to be a world championship, and he retired from the game as a three-time world champion with the distinction of having won championships on two continents (as does teammate Hideki Matsui, who won the World Series with the New York Yankees in 2009).
He returned to the Twins as a scout (spring training, 1995), then to the Colorado Rockies (advance, 1996–1998), and finally to the San Francisco Giants as a roving instructor in 1999.
Gladden was one of seven Twins who played on World Series teams in 1987 and 1991. Randy Bush, Greg Gagne, Kirby Puckett, Al Newman, Gene Larkin, and Kent Hrbek were the other six. Gladden hit.270 (1215-for-4501) with 663 runs, 74 home runs, 446 RBI, and 222 stolen bases over an 11-year major league career that spanned 1,196 games.
In 24 games with the Minnesota Twins in the 1987 and 1991 postseasons, he batted.279 (29-for-104) with one home run, 15 RBI, and seven stolen bases.
Dan Gladden Broadcasting Career
Gladden began working as a color commentator on the Twins’ radio network broadcasts in 2000, most notably on WCCO-AM until 2006, and then on the Twins Radio Network and its Metro Affiliate KSTP beginning in 2007. He collaborated with Frick Award-winning commentator Herb Carneal and the Twins’ play-by-play man, John Gordon; Carneal died on April 1, 2007, leaving Gladden to provide color commentary full-time.
