Dan Karaty Interview
Interviewer: What makes Battle On The Dancefloor different from all other dance programs?
Dan Karaty: In this program you only see hip hop crews, which should not occur once or twice, but five to six times. The viewer therefore sees different sides and qualities of the crews. I find the battles that they do impressive. As a crew they have to show what they can do and also individually. We have not had such raw battles on Dutch television before.
Interviewer: Is there still room for a dance show on Dutch television?
Dan Karaty: Everyone asked me the same question before Dance Dance Dance came on television. In the end people were lyrical about the program and they even said it was the best show they had ever seen. The most important thing is that a show is well thought out and then there is certainly room for it. Dancing is entertainment and as long as the program continues to distinguish itself with different elements, people want to see it. And that’s what I think is also the case at Battle On The Dancefloor.
Interviewer: Are there dance groups of quality in the Netherlands?
Dan Karaty: Certainly, people have been asking me for years whether I have not seen all the dance groups and if there are still dance groups left. But they keep on rising, because dance has become more popular in the last eight years. More and more people are dancing and the younger dancers are getting faster and better because there are so many people who can learn from them.
Interviewer: What do you pay attention to when assessing the dancers?
Dan Karaty: I want them all to develop their own identity. Every week there are three dance crews on stage, which may seem similar at first. It is then very important that the crews develop their own signature with which they excel.
Interviewer: What is easier: dancing in a group or solo?
Dan Karaty: It’s up to the dancer, I’ve always been better at dancing in a group and good at learning choreography, but there are also dancers who are better at freestyling and who have trouble with choreography. In Battle On The Dancefloor the dancers must be able to do both.
Interviewer: How is the atmosphere mutual?
Dan Karaty: I’ve known Dennis and Timor for years. The good thing about Dennis is that he looks at the story behind the dancers and it provides a link with them. Timor is a talented dancer and he is now participating in this show great. Also Pip ‘s a good addition to the program She and her friend Pim were able to surprise me during Dance Dance Dance, she looks at the overall picture of the performances, she does not go well on the technical side, Timor and I are ahead of it. together we feel so happy that it often seems almost no work.
