Daunte Culpepper Career

College career

Because of his low SAT scores, he struggled to get into college. When it became clear that he would not qualify, prestigious football schools such as the University of Miami and the University of Florida backed away from recruiting him.

However, the University of Central Florida offered to teach him and assist him in obtaining the required scores, and he was able to qualify. Despite the fact that prominent collegiate programs came back to recruit him, Culpepper enrolled at UCF as a sign of loyalty. Despite his fondness for baseball, Culpepper decided to pursue a career as a quarterback at UCF.

He rewrote nearly all of the school’s quarterback records, numbering in the hundreds, many of which had been held by Darin Slack since 1987.

He also broke Steve Young’s 15-year record for single-season completion percentage, which he set at 73.6 percent (71.3 percent ). This record stood until Colt McCoy (Texas) ended the 2008 season with a 77.6% completion percentage.

Early career and immediate success

The Minnesota Vikings selected Culpepper 11th overall in the first round of the 1999 NFL Draft, making him the fourth quarterback selected behind Tim Couch (1st overall), Donovan McNabb (2nd), and Akili Smith (3rd). Culpepper only appeared in one game his first season, rushing three times for six yards and not throwing a pass.

In the year 2000, he was appointed the starting quarterback for the Minnesota Vikings.

He helped the Vikings win their first seven games of the season, finishing 11–5 and advancing to the NFC Championship game, where they were routed out 41–0 by the New York Giants.

Culpepper threw for 3,937 yards, 33 touchdowns, and 16 interceptions this season. He also ran for 470 yards and seven scores on the ground.

Struggle to return from injury

Culpepper was sent to the Miami Dolphins by Nick Saban in return for a second-round draft pick. He switched back to his old number 8, which he wore at Vanguard High School and the University of Central Florida, from 11 (which he wore in Minnesota after wearing #12 his rookie season in honor of Randall Cunningham).

During the summer, the Dolphins deliberated whether to pursue Culpepper or Drew Brees. Based on a medical review of the two players, the Dolphins chose to bring in Culpepper.

Brees was returning from a shoulder injury sustained in the final game of the 2005 season.

Culpepper was able to attend and participate in all of the Dolphins offseason activities, including training camp, while still healing from a major knee injury the previous year.

He revealed in early August that he believed his knee was only 85–90 percent recovered. He walked over to cornerback Chris Gamble during his preseason game against Carolina and thanked him for injuring him; Daunte said he would still be in Minnesota if Gamble hadn’t hit him like that.

In his first two regular-season games, he went 0-2 with fans booing Culpepper and shouting for backup Joey Harrington in the second.

He did, however, improve in the third game, winning 13–10 over the Tennessee Titans, who had the NFL’s second-to-last-ranked defense. The following week, the Houston Texans, who had the NFL’s worst defense, beat the Dolphins in their first game of the season. Culpepper had arthroscopic surgery on his previously damaged knee on November 30, 2006, to remove a piece of loose cartilage that was giving him pain. Culpepper was placed on Injured Reserve on December 12, 2006, therefore terminating his 2006 season.

Steve Young, a guest broadcaster during the Dolphins’ second-to-last game on December 25, 2006, attacked Culpepper’s work ethic. Daunte questioned Young about it, saying he hasn’t skipped any meetings and that’s not how he is.

Saban left after the season to become the head coach at the University of Alabama.

On January 21, 2007, the South Florida Sun-Sentinel reported that despite public assertions by Saban, privately his decision to bench Culpepper actually had little to do with his knee and more to do with his head.

Oakland Raiders

Culpepper was first and foremost linked to the Jacksonville Jaguars, but head coach Jack Del Rio stated that Culpepper would not be a suitable fit for his team. Soon after his release, Culpepper worked out with the Tampa Bay Buccaneers, but the team did not sign him.

Culpepper signed a one-year contract with the Oakland Raiders on July 31, as an insurance policy while the Raiders struggled to sign number-one overall pick JaMarcus Russell, with whom they were negotiating a contract.

Culpepper took over for the injured Josh McCown in the Raiders’ game against his previous team, the Miami Dolphins, in 2007. Culpepper scored two passing touchdowns and three rushing scores in the game. Culpepper appeared in six games for Oakland, starting six of them. Culpepper has strained quadriceps prior to the Week 13 game against the Denver Broncos. He says he hurt himself in the Week 12 game against the Kansas City Chiefs, but it wasn’t until Wednesday that it started bothering him.

Some sources said he suffered the injury when he ran a race with Oakland cornerback Stanford Routt, a college sprinter, after practice but head coach Lane Kiffin said “I don‘t know anything about that.” Due to his injury, Culpepper did not play in another game that season and was placed on injured reserve on December 26.

Detroit Lions

ESPN announced on November 2, 2008, that he had agreed to terms on a two-year contract with the Detroit Lions and would begin training camp the following week. Culpepper officially signed with the Lions on November 3 after passing a physical.
