Dave Ross Biography

Born in Yorktown, New York, Dave Ross is an American talk show host on Seattle’s KIRO-FM radio station. Dave joined KIRO as a news anchor in 1978 and was later given his own talk show in 1987.

Dave has sometimes broadcast his show while on assignment in other locations, including overseas, such as Baghdad, Iraq in April 2004. Ross is also heard on the CBS Radio Network, where he provides daily political commentary. He was the 2004 Democratic Party candidate for the U.S. House of Representatives for Washington’s 8th congressional district. For more than three decades in his spare time, he has been performing with the Seattle Gilbert and Sullivan Society.

Born in a Catholic family in Yorktown Heights, New York, Ross is a commercial artist’s son and has a brother and two sisters. At the age of 15, he began his career at WVIP in Mt. Kisco, New York. Ross worked as a journalist at the WSB in Atlan after graduating from Cornell University in 1973, where he was a member of the Cornell University Glee Club and of the Quill and Dagger Society.

Ross broadcasts a domestic weekly commentary on the CBS Radio Network in addition to hosting his talk show on radio station KIRO (AM) in Seattle. From 1983-2004 he hosted and created for the Associated Press, called Chip Talk, the first syndicated daily radio report on computers. He was also a member of the 1995 CNET Launch Team where he contributed sections called The Last Word to the key.

Ross broadcasted multiple historical occurrences from abroad or outside Seattle. For instance, Ross traveled to the Persian Gulf on the eve of Iraq’s 2003 invasion to broadcast his radio show from Qatar. Other field trips included trips to cover the visit of the Pope to Britain in 1982, trips to China in 1984, and to the Soviet Union in 1987, the overthrow of the Berlin Wall, and the revolution.

Ross was usually depicted as a liberal (although he was also called a moderate) but is also renowned for interviewing and debating those with antagonistic conservative opinions on his radio program. According to the Seattle Times: “Ross listens, circles with Socratic issues around visitors, then makes sharp observations, but never gets to the jugular.

Ross is also renowned for his “flitch” songs (songs using existing melodies but with fresh lyrics, generally based on current events) in relation to his editorials, and often singing one as part of his radio show and CBS segments. The Seattle Times wrote that “the best of[ these] might be alongside the iconic Tom Lehrer’s.”

Ross got the Best Commentary Award for RTNDA Edward R. Murrow in 2001 and 2005. However, because the ceremony was planned for September 12, 2001, he was unable to accept the 2001 prize personally. On September 11, 2001, he was booked on a flight to Nashville but instead ended up being assigned to cover the terrorist attacks in New York City. Ross was also nominated for the Marconi Award and nomination and Clarion and Gabriel Awards. He was voted “Best Talk Show Host” by the Seattle Weekly.

Ross announced his candidacy for the U.S. House of Representatives for the 8th Congressional District of Washington as a Democrat in May 2004. At noon on July 23, 2004, he started a leave from KIRO to coincide with the start of his active candidacy. The seat was held by the 2004 retired Republican Jennifer Dunn.

Ross decisively defeated fellow Democrats Alex Alben and Heidi Behrens-Benedict in the primary election on September 14, 2004.
