Early Life and Education

Foster was born in Victoria, British Columbia, the son of Eleanor May Foster (née Vantreight), a homemaker and Maurice “Maury” Foster, an office worker. In 1963, at the age of 13, he enlisted in the University of Washington music program. In 1965, he auditioned to guide the band in an Edmonton nightclub held by jazz musician Tommy Banks.

Banks mentored Foster in jazz, producing records, and the music business. After one year there, he transferred to Toronto to play with Ronnie Hawkins. In 1966, he entered a backup band for Chuck Berry. In 1972, he repositioned to Los Angeles with his band Skylark.

Foster’s musical profession started early, with piano lessons at age five that led to registration in the University of Washington’s music program at thirteen. By age 16 he was playing piano with Chuck Berry, and had a Top 10 US hit (“Wildflower”) with his crew Skylark in 1973.
