His debut film was the 2010 coming-of-age drama, The Myth of the American Sleepover. Adele Romanski, who happens to be a friend of Mitchell’s from film school, served as one of the producers. In an interview, he revealed that the film cost about $50,000.
In 2014, he directed the American supernatural horror film, It Follows. The film was critically acclaimed. Additionally, it was commercially successful considering its low, independent film budget.
In the International Critics’ Week section of the 2016 Cannes Film Festival, he served as a jury member.

On the 15th of May in 2018, the film had its world premiere at the 2018 Cannes Film Festival. At the festival, the film competed for the Palme d’Or, before being released nationwide in France on the 8th of August. On the 19th of April in 2019, by A24, the film is scheduled to be released in the United States.
