Torres in the Philippines

Torres landed multiple movie roles, made television appearances, and received invitations to advertise items after winning Miss Universe in 1994. She became a star in the Philippines after spending five years there.

Torres learnt Filipino, the country’s national language, during her time in the Philippines. She starred in almost ten films, including Hataw Na, in which she co-starred with Filipino actor and musician Gary Valenciano (who is half-Puerto Rican).

She also starred in Linda Sara (1994), a Puerto Rican film directed by Jacobo Morales in which she was paired with Chayanne, a fellow Puerto Rican singer.

She also became a staple figure on Philippine television every Sunday on the show ASAP Mania, where her dancing skills gained her the informal title “Dancing Queen.”

Return to Puerto Rico

Torres returned to Puerto Rico in 1998 and released her only album, Antifaz, as a singer. In Latin America and the Philippines, it topped the Billboard charts.

She also appeared on the island in a number of theater plays.

In the same year, a “Dayanara” doll was launched in both Puerto Rico and the Philippines, and it quickly sold out. Torres made his acting debut in an American soap opera, The Young and the Restless, on September 1, 2005.
