Dean Baquet is an American journalist who was born and brought up in New Orleans, Louisiana, in the U.S. Since 14 May 2014, he has been the executive editor of The New York Times. Between 2011 and 2014 Baquet was managing editor under the former executive editor Jill Abramson. He is the first Black person to be an executive editor.
Baquet started his career in journalism there prior to moving to the Chicago Tribune. Later, he joined The New York Times and in the year 1995, he became National editor, after having worked as deputy Metro editor.
In the year 2000, he left to become managing editor, and later executive editor, of the Los Angeles Times. He went back to The New York Times in the year 2007 after he refused to implement management desired budget cuts at the Los Angeles paper.
In the year 1988, Baquet shared a Pulitzer Prize for Investigative Journalism, leading a team of reporters including William Gaines and Ann Marie Lipinski at the Chicago Tribune, for “their detailed reporting on the self-interest and waste” that plagued the Chicago City Council.
