FROM DOLE QUEUE TO FAMILY OF FOUR: CONOR MCGREGOR AND DEE DEVLIN’S LOVE STORY
Updated: 26/03/2019
Conor McGregor has announced his MMA retirement, as he steps away from the sport that gave he and partner Dee Devlin a new life.
The couple first became parents to Conor Jr back in May 2017, and he became big brother to a baby sister Croia earlier this year.
It is widely known the influence that Dee had on The Notorious’ rise from the dole to global superstardom, and their decade-long love story is now set for a new chapter.
Dee from Walkinstown in Dublin, first met her UFC star partner when he was undergoing a plumbing apprenticeship in around 2008.
Crumlin man Conor revealed on the Late Late Show in 2017 how they first met.
He said: ‘We met at a friend’s party like way, way back and then the usual social media, a little bit of a like here, and a like there and then a message.’
After show host Ryan Tubridy quizzed him on what social media he used, Conor replied with ‘Bebo’, which led to laughter from the audience.
The rise
Dee was instrumental during Conor’s early days and rise, and in April 2013 he finally made his UFC debut — winning $60,000 for a Knockout of the Night bonus in Sweden.
Fast forward to May 2015, McGregor had won five-in-a-row in the UFC and faced Chad Mendes for his first shot at UFC interim gold.
Speaking to MMA Fighting, the Dublin fighter opened up about how important Dee was to his life and success.
He said: ‘My girlfriend has been there since the start. She has helped me throughout this career. If it wasn’t for her, I probably wouldn’t be where I am today.’
He added: ‘My girlfriend worked very hard throughout the years and stuck by me when I had essentially absolutely nothing. I only had a dream that I was telling her.
‘For me to be able to take her out of work, give her everything she’s ever wanted and to travel the world with her fills me with pride. It keeps me going. We’ve been together for a long time. She’s been through it all with me.’
Reaching the summit
Conor McGregor was finally crowned undisputed UFC Featherweight Champion when he dismantled Jose Aldo in 13 seconds in December 2015.
One of the most emotional and memorable photos of the iconic moment would be Dee with her arms around her man in the Octagon, she shared it on Instagram at the time, writing: ‘Words can’t describe this!’
Highs and lows
In March 2016, McGregor suffered his first UFC loss to Nate Diaz, Dee was the first by his side, as he reassured her ‘it’s all good, it’s all good’.
He quickly bounced back and beat Diaz in a thrilling rematch that August, before going on to become the first fighter to hold two belts in different weight-classes in the UFC when he beat Eddie Alvarez that December.
Conor Jr arrives
Before Conor even became the Champ Champ, the couple revealed they were expecting, later telling that a baby boy was on the way.
‘I’m going to be a daddy early next year,’ he said during post-fight press conference following his win over Alvarez, adding: ‘I’m crapping my jocks!’
On May 6, 2017, Conor Jr is born in Dublin and from then on is never far from the couples’ social media activity.
Second child
Conor McGregor takes a two-year break from MMA, fights Floyd Mayweather and starts his Proper 12 Whiskey venture — finally losing decisively to Khabib Nurmagomedov in October 2018.
But the biggest news comes months earlier in July when Dee reveals the couple are expecting their second child.
Speaking on the pregnancy in December, Erin McGregor, Conor’s sister, admits ‘she is due just after Christmas’.
The latest addition to McGregor family arrived in January 2, 2019 when daughter Croai arrived.
On March 26, 2019, Conor McGregor announces he is retiring from MMA.
