Ellis started playing football and basketball back in James Madison high school in Brooklyn. He later joined Hofstra University and played as a wide receiver for the school’s team. He finished with 176 catches for 2,207 yards (a 12.5 per-catch average) and 22 touchdowns. In 2006, he was signed as a free agent for the Detroit Lions and played against the Seattle Seahawks that year. In August 2008, he was waived by the Lions and in December 2008 he signed a contract with Cleveland Browns until July the following year.
