Patriots Safety Devin McCourty Plans To Return For 2019 Season
Updated: Feb 21, 2019
The New England Patriots can expect Devin McCourty back in the outfield next fall.
“Yeah, I’m going to play,” the veteran free safety said Thursday on the Sports Spectrum Podcast.
McCourty’s future became a topic of discussion leading up to Super Bowl LIII, when NFL Media’s Deion Sanders asked on Opening Night at State Farm Arena whether the 31-year-old would be considering retirement.
“I don’t know for sure,” McCourty said at the time. “But I do look at it. If we can win this game, winning with my brother, I don’t know what else I could do that could top that.”
McCourty and his cornerbacking twin brother, Jason, saw their side of the aisle win in 13-3 fashion over the Los Angeles Rams in the days that followed.
Now Devin, born 27 minutes earlier, is zeroing in on a cap hit of $13.435 million to close his five-year, $47.5 million deal.
“I think in that moment I kind of forgot I don’t play this game just to win Super Bowls,” the two-time Pro Bowler and three-time All-Pro selection reflected weeks later. “There’s so much more that comes from me playing the game that I love. I think once you get a chance to step away for a couple weeks, you’re like, ‘Yeah, man, I still do want to be around these other young guys that come in.’”
According to the Boston Sports Journal’s Miguel Benzan, the Patriots would have moved forward with $3.935 million in dead money had McCourty departed via retirement, release or trade this offseason. Instead, his cap charge is set to rank third among NFL safeties in 2019 behind the Kansas City Chiefs’ Eric Berry and the Miami Dolphins’ Reshad Jones. It is set to rank third on the Patriots’ books, as well, trailing only corner Stephon Gilmore and quarterback Tom Brady, per OverTheCap.com.
What’s to be earned from it is $9.5 million, between McCourty’s $9 million base salary and $500,000 in cumulative per-game roster bonuses. Time will tell whether there are any amendments.
McCourty started all 16 games this past regular season while accruing 82 tackles, one forced fumble, four passes defensed and one interception returned 84 yards for a touchdown. He graded out 21st among qualifying safeties in pass coverage in the process, per Pro Football Focus, and logged 1,004 defensive snaps by the December finale.
At the end of the tunnel was a third Super Bowl ring for the 2010 first-round draft choice.
“As soon as you win it, it’s all about how you can win it next year,” McCourty said. “And if you win it again – I’ve been five times and won three times – all anybody cares about is if we win the seventh championship for the New England organization. So you have to play for so much more. I love being able to just step away. Being down here this week and next week being able to do a football camp in Puerto Rico with the family, it really starts to make you realize the platform you get to use to do some special things.”
McCourty will turn 32 during training camp this August. The safeties under contract alongside him for it include Patrick Chung, Obi Melifonwu, Nate Ebner and fellow Rutgers product Duron Harmon.
Former Scarlet Knights head coach Greg Schiano is expected to step in as New England’s defensive coordinator.
He will find familiar faces in the secondary. Perhaps nearly identical ones.
Jason McCourty is scheduled to become an unrestricted free agent in March.
