Diana Damrau (b. 31 May 1971) is a German Opera singer who was born and brought up in  Günzburg, Bavaria. Damrau is famous for her role as Queen of the Night in The Magic Flute and Zerbinetta in Ariadne auf Naxos. She also provided soprano vocals as Violetta in La traviata.

Damrau’s first operatic engagements were in Würzburg and then the Frankfurt National Theater and Opera in Mannheim. She has also performed in venues including the Wien State Opera, the Metropolitan Opera New York, the Royal Opera House London, the Bavarian State Opera, and the Salzburg Festival all over the world.

In 2004, at the reopening of La Scala, Milan, under the baton of Riccardo Muti, she was invited to play the title role in Salieri’s Europa riconosciuta. Damrau made the history of Metropolitan Opera in the 2007/08 season by appearing in different performances of the same run as both Pamina and Queen of the Night, after which she retired the Queen character. Another notable commitment was her portrayal of all four heroines in Offenbach’s The Tales of Hoffmann in a new production at the Bavarian State Opera in October 2011.

She returned to The Marriage of Figaro at La Scala debuting as the countess with the run premiere on 26 October 2016[13] where she received acclaim for her legato, phrasing, and interpretation of the aria “Dove sono” in Act 3. In April 2018 she assumed the title role of Maria Stuarda at the Zürich Opera House. In 2019 she debuted in concert performances at the Liceu in March and the Deutsche Oper Berlin in June as Ophélie in Hamlet. As well as performing in operas, Damrau is a regular on the concert stage.

Damrau continued her exploration of the bel canto repertoire with highlights including new productions of Rossini’s comic opera The Comte Ory at the Metropolitan Opera and the title role in Donizetti’s Linda di Chamounix at the Liceu. She has since returned as both Adina in L’elisir d’amore and Rosina in The Barber of Seville to the Metropolitan Opera and took her performance to Berlin and Wien in Donizetti’s Lucia di Lammermoor.
