Diane Downs Shootings
Diane, on May 19, 1983, shot her three children. After the shootings, she drove them in a blood-spattered car to McKenzie-Willamette Hospital in Springfield, Oregon. By the time they were arriving, Cheryl who was seven years old had already died, Danny who was only 3 has been paralyzed waist down, and Christie who was the eldest aged 8 has a disabling stroke,
Diane herself had been shot in the left forearm. Upon being questioned, Diane claimed that she was carjacked on a rural road in Springfield by a strange man, The estranged man shot her and her three children.
Hospital workers and investigators suspected Diane and her story since she was too calm for a person who had experienced such a traumatic event. Diane raised a lot of suspicion for calling Robert Knickerbocker who is a married man and former coworker in Arizona with whom she allegedly had been having an affair, upon arriving to visit her children.
Investigators also noticed that there was no blood spatter on the driver’s side of the car as well as any gunpowder residue on the driver’s door at the claimed scene. Robert informed the police that Diane has stalked him for a while and seemed that she wanted to have his wife dead so that Robert could have only her.
Diane owned a .22 caliber handgun which she had not told the police, Steve and Robert did. Investigators were not able to find the gun but found unfired casings in her home. They as well found extractor markings from the murder weapon.
After other shreds of evidence were found, Diane was arrested on February 28, 1984, nine months after the shooting.
