DJ Screw Death and Funeral

On 16 November 2000, he was found dead inside of his Houston recording studio in the 8100 blocks of Commerce Park Drive. His fans speculated about the true cause of his death, When the coroner reports were released, they confirmed that DJ died of a codeine overdose in addition to mixed drug intoxication.

The codeine came from a prescription-strength cough syrup that he would mix with soda to concoct purple drank. In addition to codeine, Valium and PCP were found in his blood, DJ’s funeral took place at Mount Pilgrim Baptist Church in his hometown of Smithville, Texas.

After his death, his father Robert Earl Davis, Sr., founded the DJ Screw Foundation to honor and carry on his son’s musical legacy, DJ Screw: The Untold Story, a CD/DVD on the rap artist, was released by Double Platinum Entertainment in 2006.

The first annual DJ Screwfest, held in Pasadena, Texas, in July of that year, celebrated the rapper’s music and hosted popular rap performers as well as a car show. M. D. Anderson Library at the University of Houston hosted an exhibit, DJ and the Rise of Houston Hip Hop, in the year 2012.
