As a result of the challenges that emerges in marriage, they parted ways when their daughters Kamala was seven years old and Maya was four years old. They finalized their divorce in December 1971 after which their daughters were taken back to Jamaica from where they grew up. However, on 11th February 2009, Shyamala Gopalan succumbed to colon cancer and passed away.
