E Gordon Gee “Elwood Gordon Gee” is an American academic and is currently serving his second term as President of West Virginia University. He is known for serving as the chief executive at several universities in the United States, previously serving at Ohio State University. Gee also headed the Ohio State-based think tank following his retirement from Ohio State presidency on July 1, 2013.

E Gordon Gee returned to lead We 24th president, it was a homecoming of sorts. He was first named WVU president in 1981 at the age of 36 – at the time, among the youngest persons to ever serve as a university president. He headed the Virginia University until 1985 when he went on to residencies at the University of Colorado (1985-90), Brown University (1998-2000) and Vanderbilt University (2001-07). He served as president of The Ohio State University from 1990-97 and again from 2007-13.

He served on several education-governance organizations and committees, including the Big 12 Conference Council of Presidents, the Business-Higher Education Forum and the American Association of Universities.
He is as well served as the chair of the American Council on Education’s Commission on Higher Education Attainment and formerly served as co-chair of the Association of Public and Land-Grant Universities’ Energy Advisory Committee. The King Abdulaziz University in Saudi Arabia invited him to join its international advisory board In 2009, The same year Time magazine named him as one of the top 10 university presidents in the United States.
He currently serves as chair of the Big 12 Board of Directors Executive Committee and is a member of forwarding 50, an initiative working toward student equity, success, and outcomes. Last summer, working with Department of Commerce and Marshall University officials, he was as well an instrumental in establishing the West Virginia Forward initiative to bring together state and local leaders in providing a blueprint for alignment and focus on solutions for a united and prosperous West Virginia. It quickly developed into a larger effort with policymakers, experts and government officials working together to formulate results-driven policy to help strengthen and diversify all regions of the state.
He has been active in many national professional and service organizations, he is on the executive committee of the National 4-H Council Board of Trustees as well as on the Board of Trustees of the Royal University for Women in Bahrain, with which West Virginia University has a long-standing academic partnership. He is also a recipient of the Distinguished Eagle Scout Award, he is an executive board member of Boy Scouts of America. He has as well served on the boards for the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame and Museum and Limited Brands.
In 2011, Gee began serving as secretary on the Board of Directors of Ohio’s economic development program, JobsOhio. In 2011-12, Governor John Kasich asked him to chair the Ohio Higher Education Capital Funding Collaborative and the Ohio Higher Education Funding Commission. In December 2012, he began serving on the Columbus Education Commission.
He received honorary degrees, awards, fellowships, and recognitions over the years. He is a fellow of the prestigious American Association for the Advancement of Science, the world’s largest science organization. He made an offensive anti-Catholic statement in December 2012 Gee. He said that the University of Notre Dame should not be added to the Big Ten. He said that he negotiated with them during my first term and the fathers are holy on Sunday and they’re holy hell on the rest of the week. You just can’t trust those damn Catholics on a Thursday or Friday.
At Ohio State University trustees sent Gee a letter complaining that he had embarrassed the school with his comments. The anti-defamation chair of the Ancient Order of Hibernians responded with shock that it took six months He apologized, saying that “this delayed action smacks of damage control for the media, rather than a sincere effort to address a bigoted insult to Catholics.”
Bill Donohue of the Catholic League took a more sympathetic tack regarding the issue: “It’s time for everyone to take a deep breath,” he commented. “I have never met President Gee, but it is clear from what I read that what he said was made in jest. Was it dumb? … yes. But context and tone matter, as does the frequency of what may be considered an offensive remark: a real bigot is someone who repeatedly, and maliciously, attacks others. Gee is not such a man. Political correctness has gone too far.
