In Game of Thrones, Clarke portrays the character of Daenerys Targaryen, a fictional character in George R. R. Martin’s A Song of Ice and Fire series of novels, as well as G.O.T, its television adaptation. Daenerys Targaryen is a prominent point of view character in the novels. She is one of the most popular characters in the series, and The New York Times cites her as one of the author’s finest creations.
Introduced in 1996’s A Game of Thrones, Daenerys is one of the last two surviving members (along with her older brother, Viserys) of House Targaryen, who, until fourteen years before the events of the first novel, had ruled Westeros from the Iron Throne for nearly three hundred years.
In the story, Daenerys is a young woman in her early teens living in Essos. Knowing no other life than one of exile, she remains dependent on her abusive older brother, Viserys. She is forced to marry Dothraki horselord Khal Drogo in exchange for an army for Viserys, who is to return to Westeros and recapture the Iron Throne. Her brother loses the ability to control her as Daenerys finds herself adapting to life with the khalasar and emerges as a strong, confident and courageous woman. She becomes the heir of the Targaryen dynasty after her brother’s death and plans to reclaim the Iron Throne herself, seeing it as her birthright.
A pregnant Daenerys loses her husband and child, but soon helps hatch three dragons from their eggs, which regard her as their mother, providing her with a tactical advantage and prestige. Over time, she struggles to maintain control of her dragons. She also acquires an army with which she conquers the cities of Yunkai, Astapor and Meereen, determined to end slavery and injustice there. Despite her strong moral compass, she is capable of dealing ruthlessly with her enemies, particularly the slave masters. After establishing herself as a powerful and relentless ruler, she sails for her homeland of Westeros, bent on reclaiming the Seven Kingdoms.

Clarke is a natural brunette. She however bleached her hair blonde. She told Vanity Fair that the initial motivation for the hair color change was hair fatigue. This is because like most Targaryens, Daenerys’ icy-white hair is her defining feature, which means that Clarke has spent the better part of the last decade wearing platinum wigs. “I got to a point where I said I just want to look in the mirror and see something different,” she explains. “So I was just like, ‘Fuck it, it’s the last season. I’m going to dye my hair blond.’”

Emilia Clarke worried that she would lose her ability to act after 2 life-threatening brain aneurysms, but said filming ‘Game of Thrones’ helped her cope

In March 2019, in a deeply personal essay for The New Yorker, “Game Of Thrones” star Emilia Clarke revealed that she suffered two life-threatening brain aneurysms in her 20s. The actor experienced her first aneurysm in 2011, after filming the first season of “Game of Thrones.”
Clarke was diagnosed with subarachnoid hemorrhage (SAH), what she described in The New Yorker as “a life-threatening type of stroke, caused by bleeding into the space surrounding the brain.”
In a new interview with “CBS This Morning,” Clarke said she struggled with feeling “down” after her first aneurysm. But filming the HBO program provided her with hope.
“You go on the set, and you play a badass character, and you walk through fire, and you speak to hundreds of people, and you’re being asked to be — to work as hard as you possibly can,” Clarke told CBS’ Tracy Smith. “And that became the thing that just saved me from considering my own mortality.”
In 2013, when the actor suffered a second aneurysm, she said the recovery process was more difficult.
“The second one, there was a bit of my brain that actually died,” Clarke said. “If a part of your brain doesn’t get blood to it for a minute, it will just no longer work. It’s like you short circuit. So, I had that.”
What made things especially challenging for Clarke was the doctors not knowing at first how the aneurysms would impact her life.
“They didn’t know what it was. So they were literally looking at my brain and they were like, ‘oh we think it could be her concentration, we think it could be her peripheral vision.’ I always say it’s my taste in men — it’s no longer there,” she joked.
