Dickerson was born to his parents on June 25, 1951, in Newark, New Jersey, United States. He originally took architecture classes at Howard University. Nevertheless, Dickerson still cultivated a passion for photography and movies planted by his uncle and went on to study film with Haile Gerima.
Dickerson subsequently moved to New York City to enroll at New York University’s film program at the Tisch School of the Arts, where he met Spike Lee, a fellow student. Dickerson’s first feature movie as director of photography was also Lee’s first movie, Joe’s Bed-Stuy Barbershop: We Cut Heads, in 1983. Lee later hired him as his cinematographer.
After graduating from New York University, Dickerson started his career as a cinematographer on music videos for Anita Baker, Miles Davis, and Bruce Springsteen, and went on to film his first professional movie as a director of photography, John Sayles’ Brother from Another Planet in 1984.
