She recently commemorated the end of filming for Poldark’s fifth and final season with a sweet selfie with co-star Aidan Turner. And Eleanor Tomlinson gushed about the chemistry between her and the actor, 35, as she admitted there was ‘a lot of love between’ them while they worked together.
Speaking candidly in an interview for Harper’s Bazaar on Tuesday, the actress, 26, said of their bond: ‘You can’t name what it is that Aidan and I had.”It was just there from the first screen test. There’s a lot of love between us and a lot of respect. We’ve grown together in creating that relationship and dynamic.
‘I’ve spent every day for six months with him for the past five years… you do form this bond. I don’t know how to describe it – maybe it’s a mix of brilliant writing and two people who are very honest with each other.’
Going on to explain how they were ‘each other’s support network’ while filming, she gushingly added: ‘We have a real commitment to each other. We lean on each other to get through it.’Eleanor portrays Demelza in the BBC One drama, wife to Aidan’s Ross Poldark and the Mistress of Nampara, who also inspired the actress in her everyday life.
She explained: ‘She’s taught me the importance of being true to yourself. As a character, I like her strength. ‘She’s empowering. Demelza comes from nothing but has no bitterness and shows incredible forgiveness and that’s admirable.’While her time on Poldark is over, for now, Eleanor has already started to carve a name for herself elsewhere, recently impressing with her role in Colette.
Colette tells the story of a woman who is pushed by her husband Willie to write novels under his name before she fights to have her talents known in her own name. Taking on the role of the writer’s lover Georgie Raoul-Duval Eleanor praised the film for its relevance: ‘Women are fighting this equality battle and it’s a problem that stands across time.
‘It’s because of women like Colette that women are where they are. It’s an important story, but it’s not about hating men at all. ‘Willie and Colette had a lot of love for one another, they lived together but also separately. It’s so right for the time.’She went on: ‘We owe a lot to these women who came before us and stood for their ground and fought for our equality.’
Going on to discuss her career, the Loving Vincent star admitted that acting is ’98 percent knockbacks’, and admitted: ‘It’s hard to pick yourself back up again and tell yourself that you are good enough, it’s just not this one.’But she added: ‘Sure, enough if you persevere, that something else does come along. It’s tough, but I wouldn’t change it.’
Eleanor’s interview comes after she shared a tribute to Aidan, as well as the cast and crew of Poldark, after filming ended in Bristol in February. The actress planted a kiss on the actor’s cheek while holding his face, as he wrapped an arm around her shoulders and smiled.
Wearing a red dress to transform into her character Demelza, Eleanor gushed about the cast and crew as she expressed her gratitude for working with them on the show. Eleanor wrote: ‘“Life is precious and should not be scorned. The thing is to find some purpose, to go on living.” Goodbye Poldark.’Thank you to the incredible cast and crew that have made this series over the last 5 years. What a family we are’
