Andrew Nabbout News: Lebanon unable to sway Andrew Nabbout from Socceroos dream
Some may call Andrew Nabbout a Socceroos bolter after never really being on the national radar until last year, but for the man himself representing Australia has always been on his mind.
Born to Lebanese parents, the former Newcastle Jet revealed he’s had to turn down repeated offers from the Lebanon national team in order to keep his Socceroos dream alive.
“They’ve been in contact with me constantly to try have me pledge my allegiance to them but I’ve always said that the Socceroos is my goal and I’ve declined every call from the Lebanese national team until now,” Nabbout told Reuters.
“I was really grateful to get my chance in the Socceroos and there’s no looking back now.”
After debuting in March against Norway, Nabbout has earned himself a spot in the Socceroos preliminary 26-man squad for the World Cup with Bert van Marwijk clearly rating the 25-year-old.
Able to play as a winger and striker, the Socceroos manager appears keen to make the most of Nabbout’s versatility.
“(Van Marwijk) has pretty much told me he wants me to play out wide but also play as a number nine as well,” he said.
“He said: ‘I need you to be ready for both of those roles’. And I’m more than ready.”
Nabbout is currently playing club football in Japan for Urawa Reds and has made eight appearances without scoring since his mid-season departure from Newcastle.
