Bart Peeters Interview
He is a singer, presenter, actor, entertainer and a great music expert. Whether it’s on radio, TV or a stage, Bart Peeters does it all. He is an all-rounder, but first and foremost-a great artist. Take into account that the man on April 1 and 2 for the 4th and 5th time with ‘Op de Groei’ has sold out two packed Depots and you have reasons enough to have a conversation with man on all that. I had the honor and the pleasure to interview one of my great heroes about his student life, the impact on his music and his future. It is a rainy Saturday afternoon and I am anxiously waiting for a phone call. No one less than Bart Peeters would call me after my question for an interview. The recognizable Nokia tune reverberates through the room and I am greeted warmly by the man who has been entertaining me for several years with his music, presence and personality. With me, and remarkably many other peers, Bart Peeters is very popular, but how can that be explained? “I have absolutely no clear explanation for that! I am now in ‘The Voice’ and while I am not a mainstream person who focuses on his music to a wide audience, many candidates choose me for something like that. When I ask why, they always tell me that they want something like what I show at a performance. Maybe my little secret is that I have never been busy with hypes and have never bothered to be hip. Apparently, that is still popular with many. ” If you have never been into hypes, the current hypes like Tomorrowland and Snapchat probably do not interest you (as it is described in ‘Op De Groei’). You will be satisfied with the way your youth has run? “Well, you had in my time, and then we talk about the late 70’s, only two trends in terms of hypes. Either you were punk or you were a disco frog. That was a very interesting period because everyone was devastated that The Beatles were split and then there were just very different genres. On the one hand you had The Sex Pistols, The Clash and The Ramones (who were punk) and on the other side you had The Jacksons and similar disco pioneers. As you were in The 60s either for The Beatles or for The Rolling Stones, you heard in the seventies either for punk or for disco. I was very much a punk. My hair was up and I was wearing black clothes. But when it came to love, I fell on disco-marinas. Since I went with those high heels types, I was strangely looked at in the auditorium because I was an intellectual who studied Germanic at the University of Antwerp. Such a person should not go out with disco-marinas. I was explicitly punk, my love was explicitly a disco girl. Romeo and Juliet, as it were, but with music genres. ” Have you ever gone out in Leuven? “Yes, I had to. I grew up in the small village of Boechout and the nightlife there consisted of folk dancing evenings. Hence my song ‘I’m Into Folk’, I think. That was actually very miserable because I soon felt that folk dance was pretty bad stuff. I started playing in all kinds of bands at the age of 17. For example, I played with Hugo Matthyssen and Jan Leyers in a cover group. Instead of going out in Leuven, we were actually the band that everyone went crazy. I got to know the student parties from behind my drum set and that was actually very nice. We played everything that people wanted to hear for five hours. That was a very nice way of going out. ”Related Biographies.
