L’interview de Béatrice Dalle – Stupéfiant !
Béatrice Dalle Interview
Interview of Beatrice Dalle: “Legends to the con!”
Marie Claire: Before I found you, I was told: “It’s going to be rock’n’roll! But in fact, you’re more punctual than a Swiss train. Why does this unpredictable whimsical label stick to your skin?
Beatrice Dalle : Because I do what I want when I feel like it, I guess. I can not force myself to do something that I do not like. It’s like cinema: I do not work much but only with the people I want to work with. I always choose the films in which I play in relation to the director. He must be very strict, like me.
MC: It belies the legends about you …
BD : Legends to the con! At work, I’m a real little soldier! The funny thing is when I shot with Guillaume Depardieu : everyone said we were going to be devils, but Guillaume like me we behaved like two angels. We were super happy to be there.
MC: Does it always happen to you to go into a spin, as your friend Dominique Besnehard says?
BD : What does that mean, “spinning”? I’m looking for absolute, that’s all. I was mixed up in various facts, and some of them deduced that I wanted to destroy myself. While it’s the opposite! I love life too much. Only I act as I wish, and sometimes it is against the current with morals and laws.
MC: You have definitively drawn a line on the trap?
BD: Yes, and it’s been a long time already! But not because it is, it seems, wrong to get high. If I do not want to do anything, I do not do it anymore, that’s all! It is absolutely not to be reasonable or to preserve my health.
Interview with Béatrice Dalle: “I do not want to have to explain myself all the time”
MC: In the taxi that took us to the scene of the shooting, you told me you never have a round in front of you. It does not worry you?
Yes, it’s a bit boring. But I can not put it aside, it’s against my nature. And anyway, I only do auteur films, so I do not necessarily win much. And with all that I owe taxes … I happily have a friend who lends me an apartment, otherwise I do not know where I would sleep. My dream would be to live in the hotel. I love filming for that. I like what is impersonal. I can relate to people but never objects. It does not interest me at all. And above all, I like being alone.
MC: At this point?
BD: Yes, I love it! I’m not going out anymore. It is a state of mind fairly recent but that suits me. Before, it was the opposite: I spent my life outside. Today, seeing the world has become a pain for me. When I’m on the street, people are extremely nice to me, but I can not go to the movies because they do not think it’s normal for an actress to queue up for the movies. I do not want to have to explain myself all the time.
MC: But what are you doing with your days? You stay at your home ?
BD: Yes. I listen to hardcore music very hard to think as little as possible, otherwise it makes me sad. I listen to it so much that I can not hear anything for three days. In concert it’s the same: I put myself next to a speaker and I put my head full.
Interview with Beatrice Dalle: “Work, I love it so much!”
MC: Where are you going to decompress?
BD: It’s humor? What a horror, the holidays! It’s like shopping, I hate to do it, except at Antik Batik, which I love. In the next war, I give everything I have to not find myself exiled to Seychelles ! One thing that pleases me is to walk in a rainy rain in Ireland. There I am delighted. I hate the sun, the sea, the holidays. How boring !
MC: But after a while, to stay hidden at home, your friends do not miss you?
BD: No, not at all. I have fun when I see them, but otherwise I do not think about it.
MC: What are you missing then?
BD: Work. I like it so much ! For me, the pleasure is this human adventure with a director and a team that is there to satisfy him and go in his direction.
The interview Beatrice Dalle: “I want beautiful words”
MC: Do you regret today having refused certain films?
BD: No, or so Tarantino . He had offered me “Pulp Fiction”, but it was not possible because I was taken elsewhere. As for the American blockbusters that I refused, I do not regret them, but then not at all!
MC: That unmanageable girl’s reputation hurt you a lot, anyway!
I do not find myself unmanageable. Since my beginnings it has been said that I am a rebel, but rebellious of what? No actor is. Because you’re breaking a hotel room, would you put yourself in danger? The truth is that you have millions of dollars to put the damage in expense! When I did “La fille de l’air”, I gave interviews with Nadine Vaujour . I was congratulated, but I said to them: if there is a heroine here, it’s her, not me! It’s like these American actors who save the planet in their film and who, after September 11, refused to climb the stairs to Cannes for fear of attacks … You speak of heroes!
MC: You would like to remake theater since your experience with jokers?
BD: Yes, a lot. But classic things, Sophocles , or Claudel again … I want beautiful words. If it’s about having the same kind of exchanges as when I’m going to buy my bread at the bakery, I’m not interested.
MC: This taste that you show for the classic, is not it also to break an image that we have of you and that is false?
BD: No. The proof is that the Austrian director Patric Chiha wrote “Domaine” while thinking of me, and the dialogues are extremely worked. It’s funny, because my character is a half-autistic and alcoholic mathematician. Many people around me saw me playing alcohols very well but not at all the mathematicians. While I am very good at maths and have never drunk a drop of alcohol in my life!
Interview with Béatrice Dalle: “I do not belong to anyone and nobody belongs to me either”
MC: When you said your first marriage, you said, “My idea was to belong to someone. “
Comics: A long time ago I do not think more. I do not belong to anyone and nobody belongs to me either. I was jealous before, while now, not at all. I tell myself that the important thing is that the exchange is rewarding. What do I have to do with what my guy does when he’s not with me?
MC: How’s it been with your husband since he got out of jail?
BD: For now, well, after we see … I can not talk too much. I’m afraid it’s pretty damaging.
MC: What do you like about him?
BD: His mind. This is the only thing that seduces me in a man. He is brilliant in intelligence. But I fear that life together is not for me. I lived ten years with Didier ( Joey Starr , Ed), but we never stayed together more than a week in a row. I can not stand the routine. I like the idea of seeing each other when we want to, and not by obligation. And I refuse that a man asks me where I’m going, what I’m doing. I left my family at the age of 14, it’s not to be flunked again. Never !
MC: Are not you afraid that your husband wants to live with you?
BD: Well, he’ll have to change his mind! I told him about it, he knows how I work. Living together is not possible at all. I do not like concessions, compromises, sacrifices. I do not want to be a couple for that.
Interview with Béatrice Dalle: “If he reoffends, it’s simple, he returns directly to the closet”
MC: He is an ultraviolet man, sentenced to 12 years imprisonment for rape with kidnapping and barbarity on his ex-companion. You do not fear that it starts again?
BD: If he reoffends, it’s simple, he returns directly to the closet. He has no choice, he is in conditional. I will not bear the slightest act of violence against me. Not a second!
MC: What proves to you that he has really changed? The opinion of the psys? Himself?
BD: He does not say anything at all. The words do not interest me, it is the acts that count. Words are easy: you can say everything. I do not care about words. We will see well on the length!
MC: But you’re still curious in love …
BD: I do not see how. I do not particularly like bad boys! That’s what emerges from a guy who interests me. His mind must be scotchy. If so, I do not care about anything around. Appearance is absolutely irrelevant. I will make you laugh but I would have loved to marry Prince Charles . I like that guy a lot! He is touching. And then all this royal protocol would have pleased me a lot.
MC: Prince Charles? Decidedly, you saw me …
BD: I need someone who knows what he wants. Someone rigorous who really knows what he wants. I do not like dilettantes of the mind. I like shackles and constraints, as long as I want to. You must not impose anything on me, but if I accept something, then I do it with pleasure.
MC: Coming back to your husband, did not living with him make you fantasize about your story? If you had met him in the street, would it have been the same?
BD: Yes, I think, otherwise our relationship would not last five and a half years. The common life is something else. I have never done it and I do not want it. But I’m glad he’s close to me, otherwise it would mean that I want him to stay in prison, and that’s really not the case.
Interview with Beatrice Dalle: “I still prefer to eat a Bounty than to have a child”
Mc: You have kept the mental structure of a teenager.
BD: Yes, I’m 44, but since I’m 18 I find my biological age too old compared to my mind. I have no sense of responsibility. I never wanted a child for this reason. It terrorizes me. Even an animal, I would not want it. I still prefer to eat a Bounty than to have a child.
Mc: You never thought about it? Even with Joey Starr?
BD: If at one point, but it’s great that we did not have one. I could not handle it. The stroke of the biological clock is a beautiful bullshit.
MC: What if your current husband insisted?
BD: He too would have liked, but no. We are going to buy one more, all clean. Maybe a Manchester United footballer! I will see if there is one to adopt. It’s a shame that Eric Cantona is no longer there because I would have adopted. I love it. He’s a friend of mine.
MC: Apart from him, what do you adore?
BD: Learn. Everything interests me. The oyster farmer’s job, for example: the person can always teach you things, anything, it’s always rewarding.
Interview with Beatrice Dalle: “Guillaume Depardieu was the friend of my life”
MC: Can you give me a word that looks like you?
BD: “Paradox”. Guillaume was fascinated by this word. No doubt for the image that stuck to him, while he was the opposite. Like me, Guillaume was never suicidal or sad, he was the happiest man in the world. He loved life, he had a thirst for knowledge. I have never laughed so much as with him. It may have been bullshit in the eyes of others, but it brought us a lot.
MC: You could not have a story together?
BD: Yes, of course, because he was smart, brilliant and extremely attractive. He had everything I could love about a man, but life made us the best friends in the world.
MC: You told me the other day that you lost faith the day William died.
BD: Yes. All this is finished. The church architecture is wonderful, but it does not mean anything to me anymore.
Why was his death more painful than other loved ones you lost?
I do not explain it, it’s like that. I’m mourning. They say “the man of his life”, he was the friend of my life.
Interview with Béatice Dalle: “I’m not at all sentimental”
MC: Do you regret leaving home at age 14?
BD: No, not at all. I did not want to continue this life in the province where we take care more of what happens at home than at home. I just wanted to be in Paris . I was curious about life. My parents did not really try to hold me back. I landed like that, without address, and the first night I was at the Bains Douches . But I was rather punk. Disco, it was never my cam.
MC: But with age, you have not tried to settle the liabilities with your parents?
BD: There is no liability between us, I just never wanted to see them again. They tried to reconnect, but it would have been useless because we are so different! We have nothing to say to each other, and it’s not so bad. I am not at all sentimental. I do not need anyone as I have nothing to do with anyone.
MC: Your mother must be quite unhappy, right?
BD: I do not know. The day I left home, I drew a line. I am pretty selfish. Since I do not need others, I tell myself that they do not need me either.
MC: Mais si, par exemple, l’une de vos amies était malade, vous iriez la voir ?
BD: Même pas. J’ai justement une amie malade en ce moment, et je ne vais pas la voir. Parce que je n’ai pas envie d’y aller.
MC: It’s a protection against the anguish of illness and maybe death?
BD: No, not at all! I just do what I want when I want, and what it brings me. At the moment, I really want to create a foundation for Manchester Unitedfootballers . Because everyone cares for orphaned children, or those who are starving … I decided to take care of billionaire footballers. That’s my concern. Why take care of the poor when there are rich people who can be cared for? (Laughter.)
MC: Are you sure you stopped the stoned?
BD: (laughs) Yes, in principle … Right now, I’m fat, but if the next time we meet, I’m skinny, it’s that I’ll have started the bullshit again.
Interview with Beatrice Dalle: “I have never cheated a man of my life”
MC: With all these “bullshit” you’re talking about, I guess you do not care to get old …
BD: On the contrary, it’s awful … But at the same time, I’m dealing with actresses that are so redone that they are more frightening than Frankenstein . For the moment I find that there is none who has succeeded. I can not swear I’ll never do it. Maybe one day I will flip like the others.
MC: Still, you burn your life a little, right?
BD: Not at all. It makes me laugh, because four or five years ago in Cannes , I did a show with girls of my generation and I was much better than they physically, despite all my crap. I have often said to Didier : ” We are an insult to the people who pay attention to them. ”
MC: Do you still see yourself?
BD: Of course, it would be impossible otherwise! He’s more than a friend, he’s my real family. I can not imagine staying so long with someone and taking him out of my life when it’s over. We are no longer a couple, but all the qualities that made me love him and he loved me are still there. It’s part of my life and it will always be part of it.
MC: Is sexuality so unimportant for you?
BD: Yes, it’s not really something that matters at home. I have been associated with a wolf trap because of my physique, but in reality I am a daisy! I have never cheated a man of my life. Not out of respect for them, but because I do not want to. A story of ass without the mind, it does not exist at home.
