Charlie Whiting was the FIA Formula One Race Director, Safety Delegate, Permanent Starter and head of the F1 Technical Department. He managed the logistics of each F1 Grand Prix, inspected cars in closed park before a race, enforced FIA rules, and controlled the lights that start each race.

On Thurdsay morning, on 14 March 2019, just three days before the season opening of Australian Grand Prix and 2019 Formula One season in Melbourne, Australia, he suffered a pulmonary embolism and died, aged 66.
Following his death many F1 drivers including Lewis Hamilton and personalities paid tribute to him saying how instrumental he was to the sport and its successes. He was described as the pillar for the sport, a really nice guy as well as a drivers man. He will greatly be missed and his legacy will continue living on through his improvement in safety in motorsport.
He was a big fan of racing cars. He watched his first motor race in 1964 when he climbed over the fence to see the 1964 British Grand Prix which took place at Brands hatch. He got the opening to work in motor racing himself via his older brother Nick. Since he had decided to pursue his dream in race engineering, he attended technical college and later the Borough Polytechnic Institute.
From his studies, he got equipped with immense skills in mechanical engineering. He went on getting his first job in motor sport to prepare rally cars. he went on with his job later becoming the chief mechanic for the World Drivers’ Championship success of Nelson Piquet in 1981 and 1983. He became the Technical Delegate to Formula One of the sports governing body, Fédération Internationale de l’Automobile (FIA) in 1988 and in 1997, he got appointed as the FIA Director and Safety Delegate which brought out great improvement in the Motorsport world. he was responsible for track and car safety, the technical and procedural regulations of the sport and for starting the races themselves.
At every Formula One race, he served as the lead official and he was in charge of everything related to rules and their interpretation.

F1 race director Charlie Whiting dies aged 66
Charlie Whiting, Formula One’s long-serving race director, has died on the eve of the 2019 season.
The 66-year-old suffered a pulmonary embolism in Melbourne where he was due to officiate the curtain-raiser of the new season.
FIA president Jean Todt led the tributes to the former chief engineer, saying he “embodied the ethics and spirit of this fantastic sport”.
Whiting’s entry into Formula One came as part of the Hesketh Racing team in 1977, but it was through his work at Brabham that he made his name.
As chief mechanic for the outfit owned by Bernie Ecclestone, he played an integral role in the championships won by Nelson Piquet in 1981 and 1983.
After leaving Brabham in 1988, Whiting moved on to serve as FIA technical delegate and then became FIA director and safety delegate from 1997.
Within this role, he was responsible for starting races as well as being the man teams would speak to about a variety of matters over the race weekend.
Todt said: “It is with immense sadness that I learned of Charlie’s sudden passing.
“I have known Charlie Whiting for many years and he has been a great Race Director, a central and inimitable figure in Formula One who embodied the ethics and spirit of this fantastic sport.
“Formula 1 has lost a faithful friend and a charismatic ambassador in Charlie.
“All my thoughts, those of the FIA and entire motor sport community go out to his family, friends, and all Formula One lovers.”
