Conor Maynard Interview
Is it true that you’re the new Justin Bieber?
No – I’m actually older than him! The comparison is really flattering though. I’d like to meet him.
What’s your guilty pleasure?
Chick flicks. My favourite is John Tucker Must Die starring Jesse Metcalfe. I also love Beverly Hills 90210. My ex-girlfriend got me into it and now I’m addicted.
On a night off we’d find you…
Watching YouTube videos at home. I watch music videos from new artists – after all, that’s where I was spotted. YouTube is an amazing platform for young musicians – although it’s harder to get noticed now that everyone is on it.
Who is your hero?
My dad, Gary. He’s a builder now, but he used to be an actor on the West End stage. My granddad is another hero. He used to sing Rat-Pack-style music in jazz clubs. They both inspired me to get up and perform.
When you look in the mirror you see…
It varies, some days I look rough – other days, I think ‘I look cool today!’ I wouldn’t mind being a bit taller.
Twitter or Facebook?
Twitter, because it’s easier to update on the go.
What is your secret skill?
Not cooking! I live on cornflakes. I tried to cook steak the other day and set off the smoke alarm.
What do you spend most of your money on?
Nando’s. I’m addicted to the medium spice chicken wrap with chips. I’m in there all the time. I keep hoping they’ll reward my loyalty with a Nando’s Black Card, but it hasn’t arrived yet. I hope they’re reading this.
Where is home?
Brighton originally, but now I live in London. I’m just about to move house actually, as some of my fans found out where I live and stuck Post-it notes on my door saying they loved me.
If you could give your younger self one piece of advice, what would it be?
‘Whatever happens, you’ll get over it.’ When I was 13, I remember crying on my mum’s shoulder when my first girlfriend dumped me via MSN Messenger. That was cold.
Your ideal woman?
Rita Ora sings on my new album – she’s pretty hot. I’m single at the moment; any interested girls must like Nando’s – and playing with my hair.
