Davina McCall in tears as pensioner learns to read and write on This Time Next Year

ITV presenter Davina McCall was in tears tonight as a pensioner learned to read and write for the first time.

John told the former Big Brother host on This Time Next Year his reason for learning after all these years was so he could pen a love letter to his beloved wife.

He said: “When I was young I had meningitis and that affects you, don’t it?

“When I was at school, I learnt maths, cos I knew maths was important.

“But the reading side, I just… Well, I just couldn’t do it.

“I wanted to be a fighter pilot. But since I didn’t have the qualifications, I knew I couldn’t do it.

“I had manual jobs. You know, since I couldn’t read. And I have always put food on the table for the family.”

A year later, John, from London, had done what he set out to do and learnt enough to write the letter he always wanted to write.

Welling up, Davina told him what a hopeless romantic he was.

He wrote and read out his letter to his wife on the show, he told her: “To the woman I love, you are my destiny, and every time I see you, I love you more as long as I have breath in my body I will love you.”

Moved by John’s story some viewers took to Twitter to send messages of support, one said: “What an inspirational man so lovely & so brave, I wish I could help people to read, it’s so sad to think that he never read a book or a paper!!!”
