Espen Lind Biography
Espen Lind is a Norwegian songwriter, singer, record producer and multi-instrumentalist born on May 13, 1971 in Tromsø, Norway. He is a mentor on the Norwegian version of The Voice and one half of the production team Espionage.
Lind broke into the Norwegian pop scene in 1995 performing under the name Sway. His debut album, Mmm…Prepare to Be Swayed, sold poorly but garnered rave reviews from the Norwegian music press, which was enough to earn Lind a recording deal with Universal.
Billing himself under his given name, Lind returned two years later with the lovelorn jangle rock single “When Susannah Cries.” The track shot to number one on the Norwegian charts, and made its way into the Top Five throughout Europe and Latin America. Lind’s second full-length album, Red, emerged soon after; the release sold over 600,000 copies worldwide and earned Lind a Spellemannprisen (Norwegian Grammy) for Artist of the Year. Red’s success proved to be a tough act to follow; Lind’s third effort, This Is Pop Music, failed to sell as well as its predecessor, and it was four years before he released another album (2005’s April).

Espen Lind Interview
Hey, Espen, everybody in my school loves ‘When Susannah Cries’. And your album ‘RED’ is really fantastic. But where does it start? I mean it’s not possible that you appear out of the blue.
Espen Lind: Will I tell you a secret? I was once in the Belgian Super 50 under the name Sway. That must has been in 1995. In fact, I’ve been interested in music since I was about 2 or 3 years. And when I was 11 I started to write my own songs. To let my dream come true, I even moved to Los Angeles for a year. I didn’t have a lot of money there, I didn’t know anybody and felt often very sad , but I’m glad I sticked to it!’
My mother translated your texts for me and I was very moved by them. Often they go about breaking up with your girl friend. Songs like ‘When Susannah Cries’ and ‘Niki’s Theme’ are so sincere that I think that they’re about your own private life. Or am I wrong?
Espen Lind: Euh…I don’t like talking about my feelings. It’s nobody’s business if I have yes or no relationship with babe Angelica Bridges, if Niki was once my friend. I only want to say that I have a girlfriend. Our relationship belongs to the two of us. I don’t share that with anybody else. But I shall admit it, my songs are based on things out of my own life.
Espen, I really love animals. Do you love them, too?

Espen Lind: Absolutely. I especially love dogs. When I was a chile my family had a lot of dogs. I grew up with four doberman in the house. They were my best friends. At this moment I don’t have any pets. But I wish I had the time for a dog. But I’m never at home and to keep a pet would be wrong. As soon as I don’t have to travel anymore I will immediately buy a dog.
They told me that I could ask you anything. So, how do you earn exactly with one CD?
Espen Lind: I’ve never been asked that kind of questions. An honest question deserves an honest answer. I don’t know exactly how much I earn with you buy my CD. But it’s certainly a lot of money. I earn good my bread because I write my own songs and I play the instruments myself. I don’t have to share with anybody. The popworld is a place where you can earn fast a lot of money. That is if you have success.
I think you are very handsome, but I have some trouble with your clothes. Why do you always wear black?
Espen Lind: I always thought that black was the color for people who want to send out style. It’s also an easy color because you can combine black with everything. I also think that black is the color from rock-‘n-roll. Don’t ask me why, ut you have to wear black to fit in that world.
To be a popstar seems to be very cool! What is the craziest adventure you ever went through?
Espen Lind: Once I went through something special. That was in Taiwan. It happened in September. You have to know, everywhere I go, a woman travels with me. her name is Julia. She works for my manager and she made sure nothing goes wrong. Well, in Taiwan it sent wrong because of her. She got locked up in prison. And nobody spoke a word of English there. The panic was enormous. Some time later we discovered that there’s a law in Taiwan who says that your passport must still valid six months after the date that leave Taiwan. The passport from Julia was not that long valid. I had to solve the problem on my own! Pleasant?! Since then we both determine to take a course Chinese!
I see you often on the Flemish television. So you stay here often. What do you think about Flanders?
Espen Lind: I must be honest, I didn’t get the chance to see very much from Belgium! But the people are friendly and I like the town Brussels! But I’ve never seen the sun shining in Belgium. My nicest memory? When I had to perform for ‘the Golden Eye'(awards for TV programs in Flanders.) I didn’t stay in Ostend, but in a small place, not far from Ostend. There I slept in an old and renovated abbey. The scenery was unique, so flat. It was beautiful. It was also very quiet! Cool! You have to know: I grew up in the out most north from Norway. There are almost no houses. Everything around you is nature. Well, in that place I almost had the same feeling. It felt like I was home!
I read that you have 2 brother and 2 sisters. Are they a lot alike you? Are they also such a fantastic singers?
Espen Lind: I’m the oldest. One sister is 2 years younger than me. She studies to become a pharmacist. She’s totally not musical. I also have a brother who’s 16 and one from 14, they go still to school. My youngest sister is 13. My youngest brother is the only one who makes music. But we have a totally different taste. I don’t think we will ever work together.
