While at Haberdashers’ Aske’s Hatcham College, Fiona modeled for Jackie magazine. Additionally, she used to sing in rock bands while at Hertford College in Oxford. Nevertheless, immediately after leaving college, Fiona worked for a management consulting firm for a year. Besides, she also worked at Boase Massimi Pollitt advertising agency where she met Nigel Sharrocks, the then company director.
She then went on to meet Tim Gardam – at that time the editor of the BBC’s Panorama – at a wedding and pestered him until, in 1989, he gave her a job as a researcher on the program.
