Jay McGuiness Biography
Jay McGuiness (James McGuiness) was born on 24th July 1990 in Newark, Nottingamshire, England. He is a dancer and musician who is a member of the boy band ‘The Wanted’.
Jay was born in Newark, near Nottingham in 1990, and from a very early age he loved to sing and dance in front of the mirror with his four siblings, including his twin brother.
Jay pursued his love of performing by attending the Charlotte Hamilton School of Dance in Newark. Unfortunately for the young Jay he was bullied by his classmates for expressing an interest in ballet!
As his love for the performing arts grew he attended the prestigious Midlands Academy of Dance and Drama in Nottingham. At the age of 19, Jay randomly searched for auditions in Google; he got two results back, one for a circus and one for a new band. After impressing pop impresario Jayne Collins, the force behind The Saturdays, he was chosen to join up with Nathan Sykes, Tom Parker, Siva Kaneswaran and Max George and The Wanted were formed, and the rest as they say is history.
Since The Wanted announced a hiatus after six years of whirlwind success, Jay has had time to concentrate on his hobbies, which include reading, playing console games, gardening and popping to the pub. He also loves animals, and even has a pet lizard.

Do you have any pre-show rituals before going out to perform on a Saturday night?
Jay McGuiness: I listen to music, I chat to the contestants and I do knuckles with Aljaz!
How do you think you’ve changed since starting Strictly?
Jay McGuiness: I think I haven’t changed much apart from that I’m more confident at dancing, but apart from that I still feel quite Jay-ish!
Are you pleased you joined Strictly?
Jay McGuiness: Yeah, without a doubt! Any nerves I had at the start about doing it are ok, because I’ve loved it since day one!
Do you have a lucky charm that you carry when you dance?
Jay McGuiness: I carry a girl called Aliona, and that’s brought me luck so far!
How have you managed to get your nerves under control?
Jay McGuiness: I get my nerves under control mostly through negative association! Aliona hurts me whenever I seem feeble so a good pinch and I stand up straight and smile!
Who decides on your outfits for your dances?
Jay McGuiness: The Strictly wardrobe department decide but they really want me to be happy. My favourite costume is this week’s costume… I’m wearing blue jeans and a shirt!
How does it feel to be the only male celebrity left on Strictly?
Jay McGuiness: I don’t feel like I’m the only male as there are all the male pro’s so I actually feel like the worst one!
Which dance is your Mum’s favourite?
Jay McGuiness: Probably The Jive because it’s most similar to what she would have danced to as a kid.
Do you think you will continue with dancing after Strictly?
Jay McGuiness: At the very least I’ll dance around the kitchen when I’m on my own, but I think I need a partner to dance with!
If you could choreograph your own dance, what type would it be and to what song?
Jay McGuiness: It would be Morris dancing/Hip-hop/Jamaican dance hall fusion!
