KJ Apa Says Archie Is on “His Own Mission” in “Riverdale” Season 3, Part 2
KJ Apa’s hair, or should we say Archie Andrews’ hair, is full of secrets. When we last saw Archie in Riverdale’s midseason finale, he was running from the law — and his hair was dyed dark. In a new interview with Teen Vogue, KJ explains that the brunette hue seems to set the tone for what’s to come for Archie in the rest of season three, which debuts on January 16.
“Archie’s kind of isolated a little bit from the other cast when he comes back, so he’s definitely on his own mission,” KJ Apa tells Teen Vogue. “Being in prison kind of took a toll on him. I think that he definitely wants to be back in Riverdale, but he knows that him being there can put a lot of people in danger.”
As for the hair makeover, KJ was a fan — it’s his natural hue. “The dark hair is a good look. I was stoked to have dark hair back, but only for a couple weeks.” Of course, Archie’s gotta go back to his signature red hair at some point. “It’s Archie Andrews!” KJ says. “We can’t have a brunette Archie Andrews! The fans would be really upset.”
Speaking of the fans, KJ is part of a new project that’s giving back to fans and furry friends: Starting December 18, KJ will pop up on Bumble app feeds in the U.S., Canada, Australia, and New Zealand, offering people the chance to win a full day with KJ to have coffee and volunteer with the ASPCA. That’s the American Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals, and Bumble will donate $50,000 to the cause, too.
I mean, can you think of anything better than a day of cuddling cute animals with Archie Andrews IRL? “I’ve got a few tricks up my sleeve,” KJ says. “It’s gonna be a fun day. It might even be more than a coffee!”
For KJ, pairing up with Bumble and the ASPCA was a natural fit, and something he’d been wanting to do for awhile. “I love animals a lot, and I knew that there were so many charities out there, but I don’t really see that many [working to prevent] animal cruelty,” he says. “I’ve been wanting to get behind a charity like ASPCA.” When the holidays come around, it’s natural for people to think about how to give back, get involved, and do something kind and generous, celebs like KJ included. “Giving is an amazing thing to do if you can do it,” he says. “I think you should definitely do it, even if it’s just a little bit. This isn’t even just a little bit, this is huge, with Bumble giving $50,000 [to the ASPCA.] And the winner gets to hang out with me.” KJ says the only way to get a leg up on the competition is to join Bumble and match with him, so we’re signing up ASAP.
Volunteering with the ASPCA and filming Riverdale aren’t the only things on KJ’s plate. He’s looking forward to a certain project on the horizon in 2019, though he can’t spill too many details about it.
“I’m really excited about a project that I’m about to be working on, in April,” he explained. “It’s a comedy. [More details] haven’t been released yet, but it’s an awesome project. It’s great because it’s the first kind of project that I’m going to be a part of that’s so different from Archie and the other characters I’ve played, so it’s going to take me out of my comfort zone.”
