Letitia Dean Biography
Letitia Dean (Letitia Jane Dean) is an English actress best known for portraying Sharon Watts in the BBC soap opera, EastEnders. She was an original cast of the show from 1985 to 1995, she then reprised the role from 2001 to 2006, and then from 2012 onwards.

She was born to Leslie (a tailor) and Ellie Dean, in a cottage rented on the grand estate of English romantic novelist Barbara Cartland, which is known as Camfield Place. Being born the youngest of three children, she has two older brothers, Stephen and Martin.
Her family moved to the north Buckinghamshire village of Stoke Goldington when she was three years old.

Acquiring a penchant for performing at a young age, both Dean and her brother Stephen attended a local dance school, and also performed a dance act together on stage. It prompted her successful application to join the Italia Conti Academy Theatre Arts at ten years old, and later joining the Sylvia Young Theatre School in Marylebone, London.
The school has famously produced some of Britain’s most familiar television and musical stars. She then stayed at the school as a full-time student for several years learning her trades of acting, singing and dancing.

Letitia got engaged to jobbing actor Jason Pethers in 2001 after knowing him for only a few months. The couple married in September 2002 at All Saints’ Church in Marylebone. Dean’s close friend and EastEnders co-star, Susan Tully was a bridesmaid at the wedding.
After being married for five years, in 2017, it was announced
that the couple had separated. Dean had been reluctant to have kids.
Letitia later began a relationship with model and dancer Bowen Perrin, after meeting on the set of the Ipswich panto production Cinderella during Christmas 2007. Dean is 18 years Perrin’s senior. The couple has since separated.

Letitia made her debut in professional career at the age of 12 when she was cast as “Pepper” in Annie, at London’s Victoria Palace Theatre. Being a trained singer, Dean played the lead female, Sandy, in the stage musical Grease. She appeared in numerous television programmes, including: Love Story, Tales Out Of School, Relative Strangers, Grange Hill and also the Channel 4 soap opera Brookside.
She auditioned to play one of the original characters in BBC1’s brand new soap opera, EastEnders in 1984, Dean was selected for an interview on the strength of a photograph alone. The casting directors of the show were looking for real ‘East End’ actors, Dean falsely claimed that she was born and brought up in Hackney, east London. The lie surely paid of since Dean got the part.
She also had various theatre and television roles. Dean starred in two series of the BBC drama The Hello Girls, set in a Derby telephone exchange in the 1960s, medical dramas Casualty and Doctors, the ITV police drama The Bill, romantic comedy Lucy Sullivan Is Getting Married, and also the Channel 4 sitcom Drop the Dead Donkey as a weathergirl.
Letitia Dean Strictly Come Dancing
Letitia also participated in the fifth series of the BBC celebrity dance contest, Strictly Come Dancing in 2007. She partnered with the professional dancer, Darren Bennett and they were voted out in the quarter-finals (week 10), one week before the semi-final.
Letitia Dean Eastenders
Letitia played the the troubled and spoilt adopted daughter of landlords ‘Dirty’ Den (Leslie Grantham) and Angie Watts (Anita Dobson), Sharon Watts since the show first aired in 1985 till 1995. During that time, she became one of the most popular and long-running characters in the serial.
Appearing on the show, Letitia forayed into singing with her fellow EastEnders castmate, Paul Medford (who played Kelvin Carpenter). It was a song penned for the pair as part of a plotline in EastEnders (known as The Banned) prompted the BBC to release the song as a single “Something Outa Nothing”. The song reached number 12 in the UK Singles Chart in November 1986.
Letitia featured in one of the soap’s most popular storylines, it was a love triangle featuring Sharon, her husband Grant Mitchell (Ross Kemp) and his brother Phil (Steve McFadden).
Dean left the show in 1995 due to her desire to pursue other acting roles. She was lured back to EastEnders by producer John Yorke where she then reprised the role of Sharon from 2001 to 2006. Her character left again in January 2006 and her exit announced in August 2005 and an official EastEnders press report stated that she was merely taking a scheduled break and was due back on set later in 2006, but this did not happen.
Producer Bryan Kirkwood announced in February 2012 that Dean would make a second return to EastEnders. Dean made her return on 13 August 2012.

Dean grew up in the public eye and the constant media attention on her appearance which was particularly her varying weight was tough given her young and susceptible age.
She has since stated that her self confidence was damaged during this time. Her weight issues as well as back pain contributed to her decision to get a breast reduction in her teenage years.
