Chelsea transfer news: Mattia Caldara enquiry as Maurizio Sarri plots triple Juventus raid
Updated: Jul 21, 2018
Chelsea are in the midst of a summer of change which kicked off with Maurizio Sarri replacing Antonio Conte in the hotseat. They followed that up by hijacking Manchester City’s move for Jorginho and luring the midfielder to Stamford Bridge.
Chelsea are eager to build on their £57m raid on Napoli by continuing their hunt for new signings in Serie A. And the latest reports in Italy indicate Sarri has identified Caldara to come in and help strengthen his defence.
According to today’s edition of La Gazzetta dello Sport, Chelsea have lodged an enquiry with Juventus for Caldara.Juventus are apparently unwilling to let go of the centre-back, who spent last season on loan at Atalanta.
But Chelsea do look set to snap up Caldara’s Allianz Stadium team-mate Daniele Rugani. Express Sport understands Sarri is keen to secure a reunion with Rugani having previously coached him at Empoli.
And Juventus are showing a preparedness to do business after the 23-year-old met with sporting director Fabio Paratici to discuss his future. As Chelsea experience mixed fortunes as they target Caldara and Rugani to bolster their backline, Juventus striker Gonzalo Higuain is wanted too.
Higuain, who Sarri managed at Napoli, has been lined up to spearhead Chelsea’s attack in place of Alvaro Morata next season. Higuain has waxed lyrical over Sarri in the past, saying: “My affection for Sarri goes beyond football.
“He made me a better player, I will always be grateful to him.
“I care about him a great deal as a person and a coach, he is a fantastic coach and I wish him all the best. “We always said that when we leave football, we’ll still keep in touch. “Who knows, I could even work with him again at another club. That would be wonderful.”
