Poppy Montgomery Interview
This Mom’s Life: Poppy Montgomery
As a mom, what’s the best part of your day?
Coming home from work and putting my little one to bed. It’s when we connect. He’s growing up so fast, and I like the moments that remind me that he’s still a baby.
What’s a parenting rule you never break?
I’m the worst; I break all of them. Every rule should be broken at least one time. But I am very strong about him being kind to everybody, especially other children.
And a parenting rule you always break?
Dessert — if I’m going to have it every day, I can’t say no to him. The only way to follow through is to stop eating it myself, and I’m not willing to do that yet.
What are five things that are always in your fridge?
Apple juice; mini Yoplait yogurts; avocados; half-and-half, because I drink a lot of coffee; and — I’m not going to lie — white wine.
And five things you always have in your handbag?
My phone, because I always want to be in touch with Jackson if he’s not around; my wallet; a hairbrush; hand sanitizer; and headphones, so I can listen to music and nobody bothers me.
One beauty product you can’t live without?
My facialist, Ramona Cline, makes a fantastic eye serum called Intensive Eye. I put it everywhere — on my lips, face, neck. It’s tiny, so it fits in my purse.
What’s a favorite bargain?
Shoes. If they’re on sale, I’ll buy them.
What book are you reading now?
I’m re-reading Eat, Pray, Love. I read a portion of that book every day. And everybody keeps telling me about 50 Shades of Grey, so that’s my next book.
What are you reading to your son?
Oh, the Places You’ll Go! and Alexander and the Terrible, Horrible, No Good, Very Bad Day. And he still likes me to read him The Night Before Christmas; it doesn’t matter what time of year it is.
Three words that describe your parenting style?
“Free,” “trusting,” and “fun.” I always try to make things fun.
How do you keep fit?
I work my butt off to stay in shape, especially after having had a baby. I work out at least 90 minutes a day, seven days a week. At one point I was getting up at 4 A.M. to work out before Jackson woke up. Exercise makes me a better parent. I’m calmer and happier.
