He unfortunately picked up a knee injury in September 2016 while in Barcelona training, causing him to miss a crucial La Liga clash against Atlético Madrid. He scored his first goal for the club on 4 March 2017 against Celta de Vigo which Barcelona won 5–0.
He would later play a vital role in the 2016–17 UEFA Champions League in the second leg of the Round of 16 against Paris Saint-Germain, as he started the match alongside Gerard Piqué and Javier Mascherano in a 3 man central defence partnership.
Umtiti assisted his teammates in recovering from a 4–0 first leg deficit to a historic 6–1 victory, the biggest comeback in the history of the UEFA Champions League. Now established as first-choice in defence at the club, after Barcelona’s subpar 2017 Supercopa de España while reeling off the loss of Neymar, Umtiti started the season in great form and helped Barcelona maintain an undefeated start to the season in La Liga and the Champions League, a streak that still continues.

On 2 December 2017, Umtiti injured his right hamstring and was ruled out for 8 weeks.

Having been born and spending his first two years in the Cameroonian city of Yaoundé. The Fédération Camerounaise de Football and former international Roger Milla met his advisors in an unsuccessful attempt to get him to represent their team.
Umtiti, who was uncapped at senior level, was selected by France national team manager Didier Deschamps to be part of his Euro 2016 squad following an injury to fellow centre-back Jérémy Mathieu. Umtiti made his senior debut on 3 July by playing every minute of the quarter-final against Iceland at the Stade de France, replacing the suspended Adil Rami.
He became the first outfield player since Gabriel De Michèle at the 1966 FIFA World Cup to win his first cap for France by appearing in the finals of a major tournament and was accurate with all 77 of his passes during the match, which France won 5–2.
He later earned extremely positive reviews for his performance in the Euro semifinal against incumbent World Cup champion Germany. This led to a lot of excitement over Umtiti’s prospects for his newly signed club, Barcelona, and his future as a player. On 13 June 2017, Umtiti scored his first France goal, equalising against England in an eventual 3–2 victory for Les Bleus.
On 17 May 2018, he was called up to the 23-man French squad for the 2018 FIFA World Cup in Russia. In the semi-final against Belgium on 10 July, he scored the only goal of the game, heading in a corner. On the 15 July he won the world cup, as France beat Croatia 4-2.

Samuel Umtiti Salary
The Barcelona player receives a weekly of £75,000 with his contract expiring on 30/06/2021. Barca have made an effort to keep Umtiti, raising him onto the team’s second pay grade, partly due to the fact that he will be costly to replace and there are few options.
Umtiti will add two more years to his deal – he’s currently signed on until 2021 as well as raising his low 60m euro release fee clause. He will also have a salary raised to fit his role in the team.
The board know how tough it is to find players to play in defence with the profile Barca need. The Frenchman has become one of the best defenders in the world. His role in the France side reflects the great moment he is in.
Umtiti’s priority is to stay at Barca. But he also insists the club treat him like the key player he is. “It’s clear that I want to renew at Barca and I hope to be in the team next season. I’m at a club that has helped me realise my dream. I have a contract and for me to go they will have to kick me out, I will not decide to leave,” said Umtiti in L’Equipe.

Umtiti Transfer News
Barcelona news: Samuel Umtiti signs five-year deal to end Man Utd transfer speculation.
Barcelona have confirmed Samuel Umtiti will put pen to paper on a new five-year deal.
Updated: Jun 3, 2018
The Frenchman has been a transfer target for Manchester United in recent months as Jose Mourinho looks to bolster his defensive ranks.
But Umtiti has officially ended speculation over his future by committing to Barcelona for the foreseeable future. The Catalan outfit released a statement on their website on Sunday afternoon, reading: “FC Barcelona and Samuel Umtiti have reached an agreement to extend the player’s contract for a further five seasons through to 2022-2023.
“The Frenchman will be putting pen to paper on Monday at 10.00am in the Josep Suñol lounge at the Camp Nou. About half an hour later, at around 10.30am, he will be speaking to the media in the Ricard Maxenchs pressroom.”
Umtiti’s contract negotiations were said to have stalled earlier this year due to the star’s excessive wage demands. The 24-year-old reportedly wanted to be paid as much as the club’s top earners, including defensive partner Gerard Pique. Barcelona have not announced how much Umtiti will earn with his new contract.
Umtiti has made 83 appearances for the club in all competitions since arriving from Lyon in 2016, scoring twice. Barcelona lifted the Copa del Rey during his first season, a feat they repeated in 2017-18 before also winning La Liga. United may now turn to Tottenham’s Toby Alderweireld to solve their defensive worries.
