Few months later, the family settled in the Menival neighbourhood, in which Umtiti joined the local club Menival FC at the age of five. By the age of nine, he joined Lyon’s academy. He has a big brother called Yannick Umtiti who currently manages Samuel’s career.
Umtiti was included in a Lyon squad for the first time on 16 August 2011, remaining an unused substitute as they defeated Rubin Kazan 3–1 in the Champions League play-off round first leg.
He made his professional debut on 8 January 2012, playing the entire match in a 3–1 victory over local rivals Lyon-Duchère in a Coupe de France game. Six days later, he made his Ligue 1 debut in a 1–0 away defeat against Montpellier, playing the full game. He made a total of 18 appearances in all competitions in his first season.
In the 2012–13 season, he became a more regular member of the Lyon first team. On 12 January 2013, against Troyes in a 2–1 away win, he scored his first career goal. He finished the season with 32 appearances in all competitions and two goals.
At the end of the 2015–16 season he was named as the “Best Player of the Season” by Lyon fans, ahead of Alexandre Lacazette.
Samuel Umtiti Barcelona
On 30 June 2016, Umtiti signed for La Liga side Barcelona for a fee of €25 million and made his first appearance for Barcelona in the second leg of the 2016 Supercopa de España which Barcelona won 3–0 versus Sevilla and lifted the trophy on 17 August, 2016.
He unfortunately picked up a knee injury in September 2016 while in Barcelona training, causing him to miss a crucial La Liga clash against Atlético Madrid. He scored his first goal for the club on 4 March 2017 against Celta de Vigo which Barcelona won 5–0.
He would later play a vital role in the 2016–17 UEFA Champions League in the second leg of the Round of 16 against Paris Saint-Germain, as he started the match alongside Gerard Piqué and Javier Mascherano in a 3 man central defence partnership.
Umtiti assisted his teammates in recovering from a 4–0 first leg deficit to a historic 6–1 victory, the biggest comeback in the history of the UEFA Champions League. He would cap off his first year in Spain by winning the 2016–17 Copa del Rey and by establishing himself firmly as first-choice in central defence for the club alongside Gerard Piqué.
Now established as first-choice in defence at the club, after Barcelona’s subpar 2017 Supercopa de España while reeling off the loss of Neymar, Umtiti started the season in great form and helped Barcelona maintain an undefeated start to the season in La Liga and the Champions League, a streak that still continues.
As of 20 November 2017, Umtiti, assisted by the guidance of manager Ernesto Valverde, along with the good form of goalkeeper Marc-André ter Stegen, was responsible for Barcelona having the least goals conceded of any club in Europe’s top-five leagues, with just four conceded. On 2 December 2017, Umtiti injured his right hamstring and was ruled out for 8 weeks.

Umtiti made his senior debut on 3 July by playing every minute of the quarter-final against Iceland at the Stade de France, replacing the suspended Adil Rami.

Samuel Umtiti Salary
The Barcelona player receives a weekly of £75,000 with his contract expiring on 30/06/2021. Barca have made an effort to keep Umtiti, raising him onto the team’s second pay grade, partly due to the fact that he will be costly to replace and there are few options.
Umtiti will add two more years to his deal – he’s currently signed on until 2021 as well as raising his low 60m euro release fee clause. He will also have a salary raised to fit his role in the team.
The board know how tough it is to find players to play in defence with the profile Barca need. The Frenchman has become one of the best defenders in the world. His role in the France side reflects the great moment he is in.
Umtiti’s priority is to stay at Barca. But he also insists the club treat him like the key player he is. “It’s clear that I want to renew at Barca and I hope to be in the team next season. I’m at a club that has helped me realise my dream. I have a contract and for me to go they will have to kick me out, I will not decide to leave,” said Umtiti in L’Equipe.

Umtiti Transfer News
Barcelona news: Samuel Umtiti signs five-year deal to end Man Utd transfer speculation.
BARCELONA have confirmed Samuel Umtiti will put pen to paper on a new five-year deal.
Updated: Jun 3, 2018
The Frenchman has been a transfer target for Manchester United in recent months as Jose Mourinho looks to bolster his defensive ranks.
But Umtiti has officially ended speculation over his future by committing to Barcelona for the foreseeable future.
The Catalan outfit released a statement on their website on Sunday afternoon, reading: “FC Barcelona and Samuel Umtiti have reached an agreement to extend the player’s contract for a further five seasons through to 2022-2023.
“The Frenchman will be putting pen to paper on Monday at 10.00am in the Josep Suñol lounge at the Camp Nou. About half an hour later, at around 10.30am, he will be speaking to the media in the Ricard Maxenchs pressroom.”
Umtiti’s contract negotiations were said to have stalled earlier this year due to the star’s excessive wage demands.
The 24-year-old reportedly wanted to be paid as much as the club’s top earners, including defensive partner Gerard Pique.
Barcelona have not announced how much Umtiti will earn with his new contract.
Umtiti has made 83 appearances for the club in all competitions since arriving from Lyon in 2016, scoring twice.
Barcelona lifted the Copa del Rey during his first season, a feat they repeated in 2017-18 before also winning La Liga.
United may now turn to Tottenham’s Toby Alderweireld to solve their defensive worries.
