Tim Rice Biography
Tim Rice, officially known as Sir Timothy Miles Bindon Rice is an English author and multi-award winning lyricist. As a lyricist, he has won an Academy Award, Golden Globe Award, Tony Award, and Grammy Award.
He is best known for collaborations with Andrew Lloyd Webber, with whom he wrote Joseph and the Amazing Technicolor Dreamcoat, Jesus Christ Superstar, and Evita; with Björn Ulvaeus and Benny Andersson of ABBA, with whom he wrote Chess; for additional songs for the 2011 West End revival of The Wizard of Oz; and for his work with Alan Menken on Disney’s Aladdin, Beauty and the Beast, and the musical King David.
He is one of the most celebrated lyricists in the British popular culture and was knighted by Queen Elizabeth II for his services to music in 1994.
He has a star on the Hollywood Walk of Fame, is an inductee into the Songwriter’s Hall of Fame, also a Disney Legend recipient, and a fellow of the British Academy of Songwriters, Composers and Authors.

Rice had his education at three independent schools: Aldwickbury School in Hertfordshire, St Albans School and Lancing College. He began working as an articulated clerk for a law firm in London after leaving Lancing with GCE A-Levels in History and French and also deciding not to apply for a university place. However, he later attended the Sorbonne in Paris for a year.

His parents are Joan Odette Bawden, Hugh Gordon Rice. His mother Joan (née Bawden), served in the Women’s Auxiliary Air Force (WAAF) as a photographic interpreter while his father Gordon Rice, served with the Eighth Army and reached the rank of major during the Second World War. Agter the war, they worked for the de Havilland Aircraft Company. He has one sibling, a brother by the name Jo Rice.

Rice married Jane McIntosh on 19 August 1974. They had met while working at Capital Radio. However in the late 1980s, their marriage dissolved after reports revealed by the British tabloid newspapers revealed that Rice had an affair with the singer Elaine Paige. The two have however never made it absolute hence they are technically still married and Jane retains the title Lady Rice.
The pair have two children, Eva Jane Florence, a novelist and singer-songwriter, and Donald Alexander Hugh, a film director and theatre producer who also helps to run Dundonnell, the family’s estate. Lady Rice is the one who manages Dundonnell estate, the family’s 33,000 acre estate which Sir Tim Rice bought in 1998 for £2 million

John Legend, Andrew Lloyd Webber and Tim Rice have been awarded Emmys for their TV production of Jesus Christ Superstar, earning them EGOT status – meaning they have each won Emmy, Grammy, Oscar and Tony awards.
EGOT winners are an exclusive club: including the trio, only 15 people have ever managed to achieve the four wins, including Audrey Hepburn, Mel Brooks and John Gielgud.
Jesus Christ Superstar won outstanding live variety special at the Creative Arts Emmys, awarded at the Microsoft Theater in Los Angeles – the production also won awards for production design, lighting, technical direction and sound mixing.
