Wenche Myhre Biography
Wenche Myhre (Synnøve) was born on 15 February 1947, in Kjelsås, Oslo, she is a Norwegian singer and actress who has had a great number of hit songs since the 1960s in the Norwegian, Danish, German as well as the Swedish markets and languages.
She got her first recording contract with composer and producer Arne Bendiksen at the age of 13, after she had won a talent contest staged by Verdens Gang newspaper at the Chat Noir theatre in Oslo in 1960. In 1963 she became the first performer to have three songs in the Top 10 at the same time. She got her first film role the same year.
Wenche Myhre Career
She made her first appearance in the Norwegian heats for the Eurovision Song Contest 1964 with the song “God gammel firkantet vals” which the juries placed second. She also participated in 1966 with two songs, “Lørdagstripp” which was the fourth and “Vims” which came fifth.
She represented Germany in the Eurovision Song Contest 1968 with the song “Ein Hoch der Liebe” where she placed sixth. It would be another fifteen years before she attempted Eurovision again and did so via the German national heat, singing “Wir beide gegen den Wind” with her son. In the same year, she was one of Jahn Teigen’s chorus girls in the Norwegian final. When Teigen won, the potential prospect of singing both for Norway and Germany became too much and she was replaced by Anita Skorgan in the international final in Munich. In 1992 she was the third in the Norwegian selection with “Du skal få din dag i morgen”. She participated in the Norwegian selection again for the Eurovision Song Contest 2009 in Moscow, Russia. She performed the song “Alt har en mening nå” in the second semi-final on Saturday 31 January, but she was eliminated from the competition.
She had the first in a long series of TV shows on the German channel ZDF in 1974. The show was called Das ist meine Welt and was a musical journey through many countries with her being the guide. Myhre hosted the German qualifying heat for the Eurovision Song Contest 1986, “Ein Lied für Bergen”.
In Sweden, she has worked together with Povel Ramel, and has become very popular with a wide audience. She has starred in movies both in Norway and Sweden.

Wenche Myhre, one of Norway’s most beloved artists, with a career spanning 5 decades recently experienced every woman’s nightmare when a growth was discovered during a routine breast check.
The 63 year old went for a routine mammogram 2 weeks ago, when a small growth was discovered. According to doctors, the prognosis is good, as the benign tumour was apparently caught at an extremely early stage. The operation was by all accounts a success, and she was discharged the following day. The operation and treatment have meant that Wenche has had to cancel a number of committments and appearances this coming autumn.
Wenche released a statement through her lawyer to VG, one of Norway’s largest tabloids, telling them that “Of course it came as a shock to me, as to everybody else, but when the staff at the hospital informed me about treatment options and their routines for post operative monitoring,I feel as if I’m in the very best hands. I just need to think of the whole situation and the treatment as a challenge. I need to give myself and my family top priority over the coming months, and at present I have no further comments”.
Wenche has enjoyed great success as an artist both in Norway and Sweden, as well as major stardom in Germany, where they practically adopted the teenager as their own during the 60’s, affectionately referring to her as Die Wencke. She went on to represent Germany with Ein Hoch Der Liebe in 1968, achieving a very respectable 6th place. The star has surprisingly never represented her home country, the closest she came was in 1992 placing third in the national selection with Du Skal Få Din Dag I Morgen.
