Sweden’s Zara Larsson on Being a Role Model, Staying Humble: Interview
Zara Larsson, one of Sweden’s youngest sensations at 19, performed a concert organized by VW Garage Sound platform at the Gibson Club in Frankfurt, Germany. Before her show, she signed autographs and happily met a few meet-and-greet winners.
The singer also spoke to Billboard Argentina about her current success, how she tries to keep humble and her imminent arrival to Latin America and Argentina:
Interviewer: What do you know about Latin America?
Zara Larsson: I know, and that makes me wanna go even more. I can definitely say that I am 100 percent coming to Argentina in this coming spring. I’m really excited about that because I’ve never been there before. It’s crazy because I’ve been in every continent except for that one. So I feel like it’s really about time.
Interviewer: Just now, you were signing autographs. There were little kids there. Do you feel responsibility in terms of the message of your songs?
Zara Larsson: I am a young woman, and I should be able to express myself however I want. Some of my songs are a bit sexual, but at the same time, who I am as a person, and if they follow me on Instagram or Twitter, I feel that it’s important to show them that I believe I have a good heart.
Even though I might be out partying, I might be singing about grown up stuff, I want people to treat others with respect. I think equality is an important question for me, and all of that. So, in that aspect, I really see myself as a role model, and I try to take responsibility for that.
Interviewer: How do you manage your ego?
Zara Larsson: I would say I have so many dreams — big, big dreams. I aspire to be the greatest, so I have a very long way to go, even though I had a few number ones in some countries. I don’t know, I haven’t had a number one in Argentina. I haven’t had a number one in America, a Grammy or a sold-out stadium world tour. There are so many things I wanna do, and thinking of that, thinking of how far and what an exciting journey I’m on, that makes me humble.
I’m super grateful for all the things that I’ve done, for all the things that people want me to do, like they come to my shows, buy my songs, but I’ve so much more to come. Just thinking of that makes me want to work harder, and keeps me motivated without getting my head in the air, rather just keeping my head on the ground.
Interviewer: Talking about you, do you believe in God? In family, friends, love?
Zara Larsson: I believe a lot in love, especially in these times.
Interviewer: Are you in love?
Zara Larsson: I am in love! I’m in love right now. But I also have love for other people, which doesn’t have to be romantic. Just to treat others kindly, to be nice to people because nowadays there are so many people that aren’t empathic. We look at politics, and you might see that people talk about the left and the right side. If the left is about being for the environment, about quality for people, what’s the right side about then? I don’t know. But I believe in love, in family for sure. I’m not sure about how I see God. I haven’t figured that out yet. I have time. I believe in the universe.
