Farin Urlaub Interview
Interviewer: The Palladium in Cologne has already sold out twice in succession on the current tour . Münster not …
Farin Urlaub: ( laughs ) Yeah, the pigs. Would you have written something else. No, I do not understand it either. After the criticism of Carsten Vogel everything must be great. Maybe I did not pay enough attention to local sensitivities. There are no songs about Münster on the new album, so maybe the Münsterans are vindictive.
Interviewer: Incidentally, that’s something that bothers me at concerts right now. Artists take on the stage and call the name of the venue more often than football fans in the stadium.
Farin Urlaub: I never understood that either. In particular, when the rock star in a small club in front of 400 people and calls “Hello Berlin !” Then you also think Berlin has about 3.5 million inhabitants, that’s a few more. This is certainly the mental abbreviation the musicians use because they have to focus on their chords and lyrics. Since you can not remember even good announcements.
Interviewer: I can understand, that one wants to make local reference …
Farin Urlaub: The bad thing is that it works. You say “Cologne” in Cologne and people love you.
Interviewer: But everyone does …
Farin Urlaub: Yeah, and maybe that’s why everyone thinks they have to get involved. I try to pick up the people where they are, namely in front of the stage. That is, it is welcomed by name …
Interviewer: Alphabetically, of course (laughs) …
Farin Urlaub: Exactly. All Andreasse, hey ( laughs ). It takes a bit, you do not have much time left to play, but my god … It was really personal for that.
Interviewer: Maybe that’s why it was not sold out because you were on a club tour in Emsdetten. The idea to perform only in places with “-furt” at the end, I found funny. How about recording an album with Maria Furtwängler or Nelly Furtado?
Farin Urlaub: Oh no. I found the first joke pretty flat. But that also breitzutreten.
Interviewer: What? Flat jokes are great!
Farin Urlaub: Yeah, I know, I live on it ( laughs ).
Interviewer: Last year, “Richy Guitar” was in Münster’s open-air cinema.
Farin Urlaub: Oh, stop …
Interviewer: The movie is now 30 years old. Well, freshers may not know that, would you recommend them to look at him?
Farin Urlaub: I hated the movie. Really bad. The main actor can not act at all …
Interviewer: I try to ironically counter and say Nena, but Farin understands Bela and immediately replies that he means the other – so himself Bela attested him but acting talent. Only it was him, that all people always thought it was in the movie about “The doctors”. He would like to undo the film.
My girlfriend said after the movie, “The movie is bad. But so bad that he is well again. ”
Farin Urlaub: I just came to the first sentence ( laughs ).
Interviewer: On Spotify there is no racing team, no doctors. Why?
Farin Urlaub: Because I strongly oppose it. If I want to give someone something, then I do it personally.
Interviewer: Is that a gift?
Farin Urlaub: Yes. The following anecdote. The people of Spotify were so sure that these weird krautbands that they’ve never heard of would join in as well. And then we were on Spotify for a few days until our lawyers objected. There were about 200,000 views. And a year later came the settlement. I almost did not notice.
Interviewer: As? So little?
Farin Urlaub: I think about 16 cents. And now I’m asking you, why do you think I do not want to be on Spotify as a musician?
Interviewer: Well, you will not get rich by it …
Farin Urlaub: I have enough money, but then people should take the eggs and download everything illegally. That’s a slap in the face of every musician. What a shit.
Interviewer: I once read that Taylor Swift earns $ 6 million through Spotify.
Farin Urlaub: No, she earned the money because Spotify can advertise with her name.
Interviewer: That does not sound like a model for success.
Farin Urlaub: Spotify wants to pay the musicians a pittance. People should come to Spotify and listen to the ads. They deserve this, but they do not pass it on to the musicians. I am so disgusted that I do not want to be a client or a musician.
Interviewer: As a customer, you are not on any social network.
Farin Urlaub: For God’s sake, I have real friends.
Interviewer: Okay, maybe you do not need any advertising anymore, but maybe a social network would be an appropriate platform to promote your social cause.
Farin Urlaub: Yeah, now imagine, you’re on Facebook and have your 20 favorite bands – so many you have on average – geaddet and each of them wants to save the world. And that floods your news page. How seriously are you taking this then?
Interviewer: Hm, that relativizes itself …
Farin Urlaub: I think that’s terrible. Of course you can argue: Dude, you were born in 1963, that’s life now. But then I do not have to attend.
Interviewer: Do not you feel that you have distanced yourself from today’s youth, that you have become unworldly?
Farin Urlaub: No, that’s too much. Personally, I think social networks are a waste of time. I visit my friends face to face and then we talk. Good, we also telephone or write SMS. But I do not have to tell everyone that I’ve just laid an egg. For heaven’s sake. My life is not that interesting, nor is the life of others so interesting.
Interviewer: Let’s talk about your current album.
Farin Urlaub: Thank you.
Interviewer: Yes, of course, excuse me.
Farin Urlaub: ( laughs ) No, everything is fine.
Interviewer: Why is the song “iDisco” called that way and not for example “iDiot”?
Farin Urlaub: You can also abbreviate. “Idiot Disco” is the working title. That does not sound as good as “iDisco”.
Interviewer: And I idiot did not come up with it …
Farin Urlaub: Lalala ( laughs ). Since you can not get on it. But clearly it is also an allusion to the company, which mainly sets a small “i”. Uh, that’s all very modern.
Interviewer: Let’s get to the word “Bregen”. ‘Er …
Farin Urlaub: ( laughs ) There are cultural differences, because for me this is a completely normal colloquial word. Can not you even try your Bregen? Special term for beef brain, but so normal for me that I did not know that others do not know it. Until the first questions came, what Bregen was. That’s not serious, people!
Interviewer: So how maybe “knorke”?
Farin Urlaub: No, that’s not a Berlin expression. Rather north-south or east-west divide. I dont know. I did the sample, and everyone in my circle knew what Bregen is. But I also have only veterinarians as friends, maybe I should say that ( laughs ).
Interviewer: There is a kale equator, maybe one for Bregen?
Farin Urlaub: Let’s find out ( laughs ). I am looking forward to your feedback.
Interviewer: In the song “Dynamite” comes the line “Dynamite – architectural criticism that you actually see”.
Farin Urlaub: I’m so proud of the line, I can not tell you that. I actually had to put the pen aside because I had to laugh heartily for five minutes. That sounds very narcissistic now, but the beauty of writing texts is that you can surprise yourself.
Interviewer: I laughed too. Now the album is a bit older. And when I think of how the IS just made Nimrud the same …
Farin Urlaub: That’s not an architectural criticism. The point is that they want to live in the year 800 – and everything that was before or after, should please disappear. The discrepancy, however, is that they share this on social networks, because they have to use the Western stuff. It is so sad. For us it is “bad” because we see that a World Heritage is destroyed. But in truth they are destroying the whole background and the whole past of a people. Everything that is important, what defines it, should be razed to the ground and that is so hard.
Interviewer: But you’re probably more interested in gentrification?
Farin Urlaub: No, “Dynamite” is about something else: the same-connected inner cities, where only chain stores are. No matter on which continent and in which city, the main shopping street looks the same everywhere. There is no shadow, no real seats: You should spend your money and then quickly disappear, a coffee costs 20 euros. No thanks. It is not an IS glorification song ( laughs ).
Interviewer: That’s clear in your political positioning. And yet: If you play in Dresden on the tour, will you use that to say something against Pegida?
Farin Urlaub: For the audience that comes to the racing team …
Interviewer: … you do not expect that.
Farin Urlaub: That would be “preaching to the converted” and that’s not my thing. In Munich I do not say what FC Bayern are for a great team. If I wanted to say something like that, then somewhere else. And not just in Dresden. But my opinion is really no secret.
A nice final word. I thank you.
