While still a teenager, Brown won a talent contest in Brooklyn, New York’s Park Slope neighborhood. That night, members of the Trackmasters production team who were working on Mr. Smith’s LL Cool J album attended and were inspired enough to invite Brown to rap over “I Shot Ya”.
She was an overnight sensation at such a young age, because she was very talented and provocatively rapping. She followed this breakthrough with appearances by other artists on many RIAA platinum and gold singles, including remixes of Toni Braxton’s songs “You’re Makin’ Me High.” Brown was also featured on the soundtrack of the 1996 film The Nutty Professor, on the songs “Touch Me Tease Me” by Case, and “Ain’t No Nigga” by Jay-Z.
Her second album, Chyna Doll, was released in 1999, and her third album, Grammy-nominated Shattered Silence, was released in 2001. She has appeared on songs since 2001 but didn’t release any albums. She left Def Jam in 2003 and scrapped the release of her Ill Na Na 2 album, but came back in 2005 once Jay-Z, then president and CEO of the label, signed her again to start work on her new album Black Roses.
