His career as a weatherman kickstarted in 1958 at WRCA-TV – which later transformed to WNBC-TV in 1960 and remained there for over 25 years. Field was friends with Johnny Carson and was a regular guest on The Tonight Show. He moved to rival WCBS-TV on August 12, 1984, where he worked for 11 years. Later, he proceeded to WNYW-TV where he worked for two years before finishing his weather forecaster career at WWOR-TV. He was widely noted for his science reports on new technology and medicines.
In the 1970s and 1980s, from WNBC, he hosted a nationally syndicated program on health called Health Field and anchored a similar health news program called Medical Update on WLNY for the North Shore-Long Island Jewish Health System.
