Mike started posting videos on social media platforms such as Vine and made a name for himself in his hometown of Baton Rouge. He also gained popularity for his names such as “Mighty Mike”, “Funny Ass Mike”, or “girl funny”. He signed to the independent record label “Travis Jones Entertainment”. Johnson then released his first single “Hit That Bit For The Gram” which earned over 400,000 views.
His fame even grew when he changed his stage name to “22 Savage” as he stole the song title “No Heart” and the album title “Savage Mode” from rapper 21 Savage to which Johnson responded with no shame and claim he was better than 21 Savage.
