Gardner is an extensively recognized sportscaster. Prior, she worked for ESPN and NBC Sports for 6 years. She is well known as a pioneer in sports broadcasting. Likewise, she is the first female sports anchor to appear weekly on a major network. Citing her time at ESPN, Gayle served as a SportsCenter anchor for three years. Afterward, she was hired by NBC where she worked as their sports reporter from 1987 to 1993.

While there, she covered NBC’s New Year’s Day college football bowl game. On the other hand, Gardner also anchored Major League Baseball: An Inside Look. Likewise, she did a report for NFL Live!, NBC’s 1988, and 1992 Summer Olympics. Furthermore, she covered NBC’s “Prudential Sports Updates” and French Open, Wimbledon.

Most noteworthy, Gayle was a member of the NBC broadcast team for Super Bowl XXIII in 1989. It is known that she became the first woman to do televised play-by-play of a baseball game.
