As a young adult, he settled in Houston, TX, and then began performing in the big Houston nightclubs while operating as a paint and body man throughout the day. He acquired a strong local audience with his stage act and it was in Houston where he released his première single on Sun Valley Records. The single “If It Was That Easy” never charted but as Gene states “it was just exciting to see my name on a record release and to believe that I was really in the business”. The Grand Ole Opry duo, The Wilburn Brothers, took Gene on the road briefly in 1964. It was The Wilburn Brothers who took Gene to Nashville for the very first time and left him to sing on the stage of the Grand Ole Opry. Gene notes “I sang the Hank Williams song ‘I Can’t Help It if I’m Still in Love With You’ and received a standing ovation so not understanding what to follow with I just went out and did a gospel standard ‘It Is No Secret What God Can Do’. Later, they took him to the Ernest Tubb Record Shop and he got on stage and broadcast on The Midnight Jamboree. Then it was back to the Texas honky-tonks and a string of local singles during the ‘60s. In 1974, one of Watson’s small-label singles reached the ear of Capitol Records. Gene was an auto-body repairman and the featured singer at Houston’s Dynasty nightclub when Capitol Records picked up the steamy, sexual waltz “Love in the Hot Afternoon” for national distribution. It became the first of Watson’s two-dozen top-10 hits in early 1975. Gene decided to quit drinking in 1980 and discontinue smoking not long after that. He went through surgery and survived colon cancer in 2000-01. Through it all, he proceeded to record one critically acclaimed collection after another. Watson was enlisted into the Texas Music Hall of Fame in 2002 and later into the inaugural class of the Houston, Texas Music Hall of Fame in 2013.

Come in, pretty lady, you’ve just made my night
I wasn’t too sure that you’d call
Sit down and I’ll fix you a drink if you like
It’s late but the morning’s still young
I’m glad you could make it, I hoped you’d get by
I thought about this all week through
What’s that, what’s the matter, what’s making you cry
You say it’s the first time for you
Leave if you’d rather not lose what you came for
Walk out the same door that I let you in
Leave if you’d rather not lose what you came with
Stay and you’ll find this is where love begins
It’s not like we’re strangers I’ve kissed your warm lips
But someone was always right there
But now we’re alone so there’s no buts or ifs
Come here, let me take down your hair
Leave if you’d rather not lose what you came for
Walk out the same door that I let you in
Leave if you’d rather not lose what you came with
Stay and you’ll find this is where love begins
Gene Watson Carmen Lyrics
Oh Carmen, I had too much tequila
Between you and this Mexican moon I’m gonna fall
El Paso lady, you’re driving me crazy
In a language I don’t understand, you said it all.
Dusty old Juarez on the old Rio Grande
It’s sure is handy when you need a friend
I don’t belong here, your dark eyes keep warning
I’ll leave in the morning but for now please let me in.
Oh Carmen, I had too much tequila
Between you and this Mexican moon I’m gonna fall
El Paso lady, you’re driving me crazy
In a language I don’t understand, you said it all.
Crossing over the border, stepping over the line
Drunk on yesterdays wine and still feeling the flame
The guitars keep playing a song that I’ve never heard
Without saying a word, you keep calling out my name.
Oh Carmen, I had too much tequila
Between you and this Mexican moon I’m gonna fall
El Paso lady, you’re driving me crazy
In a language I don’t understand, you said it all.
In a language I don’t understand, you said it all
