George Baker Career
In 1967 Bouwens joined band Soul Invention, a soul band that played covers of songs by Otis Redding and Sam and Dave. They changed their name to “The George Baker Selection”. The band consisted of Jan Hop, Jacobus Greuter, George Thé, and Jan Visser.
In 1970 they released their debut album Little Green Bag. Their debut single “Little Green Bag,” reached No. 16 on the Cash Box magazine chart and No. 21 on the Billboard Top 100 in the United States. The single sold over one million copies globally, and received a gold disc.
Their second single, “Dear Ann,” was such a success. At the time Baker worked at a lemonade factory but due to the sucess of their singles he resigned and became a full time musician. Hev also wrote songs for other musicians including BZN, The Shoes, Andy Star, and Next One.
Baker disbanded the band in 1978 due to the pressure, according to Baker “the pressure had become too much.” In 1985 Baker formed a new George Baker Selection which was active until 1989.They released twelve albums and several compilation albums.
In 1978 Baker, after disbanding the Selection, performed as a solo artist until 1985 when he formed a second batch of Selection. In 1989 he returned as a solo artist. In 2005, he released a remix of the song “Paloma Blanca” for the film Too Fat Too Furious. He has released nine albums as a solo artist.
Paloma Blanca was the band’s fifth album and was released in 1975. The single with the same name reached No. 1 on charts in several countries and sold more than seven million copies worldwide, making it one of the most successful Dutch singles ever.
