Greg Kelser College career

Upon graduating from Detroit Henry Ford High School in 1975, Kelser was brought to Michigan State by Gus Ganakas, who left the head coach position after Kelser’s freshman season. His impressive on-court skills earned him the sobriquet “Special K”, after the locally-made cereal.

In his junior year (the freshman year for Earvin “Magic” Johnson and Jay Vincent) under coach Jud Heathcote, the Spartans squad had an impressive season, racking up a 25–5 record, the Big Ten Conference title, and a berth in the 1978 NCAA tournament, where they made it to the regional finals before losing narrowly to eventual champion Kentucky.

As a senior, he along with Johnson led the Spartans to the 1979 NCAA tournament championship, the first in the school’s history. He was often on the receiving end of spectacular alley-oop passes from Johnson. He later wrote a book about his basketball experiences at MSU.

Kelser finished his career at Michigan State as a 2-time Academic All-American, something he credits Jud Heathcote for keeping him on task to achieve. He was the very first Big-10 player and remains the only player in Spartan Basketball history, to score over 2,000 points with over 1,000 rebounds.

This summer, Winning Futures is teaming up with the Gregory Kelser Basketball Camp to bring a fun, high-energy basketball and mentoring program to 6th-9th-grade students in southeastern Michigan.

This week-long camp, proudly sponsored by Lear Corporation, inspires and coaches students to be successful on and off of the court. With the guidance and support of Pistons legend Gregory Kelser and Winning Futures mentors, each student is challenged to pursue their education with the same determination and energy they use with sports.

Students must attend all five days of the camp and parents are responsible for their transportation. We encourage interested attendees/parents to complete the online application as soon as possible.

A local broadcasting icon and one of the most recognizable personalities in Detroit and the NBA, George Blaha begins his 35th consecutive season as the television and radio play-by-play voice of the Detroit Pistons in 2010-11. The “Voice of the Pistons” is the longest-tenured play-by-play announcer in the State of Michigan.

Blaha brings a high-energy style to go with his extensive basketball knowledge and demonstrates a true passion for Pistons basketball. His trademark colloquialisms such as, “two and twenty-two to play”, “a high glass gun that goes” and “count that baby and a foul” have thrilled Pistons fans of all ages for over three decades.

Blaha, an inductee into the Michigan Sports Hall of Fame in 2008, has been the recipient of many industry awards, including the Ty Tyson Award for broadcasting excellence by the Detroit Sports Broadcasters Association in 2002 and Michigan Sports Broadcaster of the Year from the National Sportscasters and Sports Writers Association in 2003 and 2007.
