Gregg Hughes Biography

Gregg Hughes is an American Radio Personality and Podcast Host born in Centerport, New York. He is better known by his air name Opie. Gregg is mostly known as the former co-host of the Opie and Anthony radio show.  It aired from 1995 to 2014 with Anthony Cumia and comedian Jim Norton.

Gregg and Norton stayed at SiriusXM as co-hosts of Opie with Jim Norton from 2014 to 2016.  Gregg became the host of his own show, The Opie Radio Show in October 2016, which lasted until his firing from SiriusXM on July 7, 2017.  He launched his new podcast, The Opie Radio Podcast, on the Westwood One network on May 8, 2018.

Gregg Hughes The Opie Radio Show

Gregg announced his new weekday afternoon show on the Opie Radio channel from 3:00 p.m. to 6:00 p.m on October 3, 2016. He was not happy with the move as he felt “blindsided” by Norton’s decision to host the channel’s morning program, Jim Norton & Sam Roberts with Sam Roberts.

He claimed he was not informed of the news until the week previous, which is why he felt “so mad”. The Opie Radio Show launched on October 4, 2016. During the first show, he spoke to Cumia on the air for the first time in over two years.

Gregg was fired from SiriusXM for undisclosed reasons, as reported online on July 6, 2017. It came almost three years to the day of Cumia’s firing.  Later in the day, Gregg tweeted: “I can honestly say I have no idea exactly what’s going on as I tweet this. More when I know.”

On July 7, Gregg confirmed his firing via a YouTube video, stating that he had not been allowed to say “Your mom’s box”, a phrase from Opie and Anthony, on the air on his last shift, so he wrote it in the sand on the beach where he shot the video.  His’ departure was based on an alleged incident where he filmed a colleague using the bathroom.

Gregg said on March 19, 2018, that he had signed a contract with Westwood One to develop a podcast and a traditionally syndicated radio show for the network.  Westwood One has yet to announce Hughes’ new show.  On May 2, 2018, it was announced that the podcast would debut the following week, with the first episode airing on May 9, 2018.

Opie and Anthony is an American radio show hosted by Gregg “Opie” Hughes and Anthony Cumia that aired from March 1995 to July 2014, with comedian Jim Norton serving as third mic from 2001. The show originated in 1994 when Cumia took part in a song parody contest on Hughes’ nighttime show on WBAB on Long Island, New York. After subsequent appearances, Cumia decided to pursue a radio career and team with Hughes to host their own show.

In October 2004, Opie and Anthony returned to the air in the mornings on the uncensored subscription-based XM Satellite Radio from New York City. From April 2006 to March 2009, the first half of the show was simulcast on as many as 24 terrestrial radio stations owned by CBS Radio and Citadel Broadcasting.

On July 3, 2014, the show ended after SiriusXM abruptly fired Cumia for a series of tweets that it deemed controversial. Cumia started his own show, The Anthony Cumia Show, while Hughes and Norton remained at SiriusXM to host Opie with Jim Norton. In 2016, the pair split to pursue their own shows on SiriusXM. Hughes was fired from SiriusXM in 2017 and pursued his own podcast.

Gregg and his wife sued Steppin’ Out magazine columnist Chaunce Hayden for $10 million in 2008. Hayden had claimed in his column to have become aware of the existence of a sex tape of Smigo and Bam Margera, a claim he later retracted.  The lawsuit was dismissed on March 16, 2010, as the judge ruled that the original news story was newsworthy, noting that all parties had agreed that no sex tape actually existed.
