Gregory L. Fenves Career
Gregory ventured into his career as a deputy professor in the Department of Civil, Architectural and Environmental Engineering at UT Austin from 1984 – 1987. He was on the staff of UC Berkeley for more than 20 years and served as chair of the Department of Civil and Environmental Engineering from 2002 – 2007.
He is a globally recognized constructive engineer and led the development of one of the most widely used open-source software platforms in the civil engineering profession. He was one of the pioneers for growing wireless sensor networks for keistering the structural health of buildings, bridges, and infrastructure and has concentrated his research on the simulation of structures subject to earthquakes.
Aside from his duty as an administrator deputy president and provost of UT Austin from 2013 – 2015, he was chosen as the eighth dean of the Cockrell School of Engineering at UT Austin in 2008 and worked in that capacity for five years. In 2015, he was chosen as the 29th, president of UT Austin.

On March 13th, 2020, the University of Texas president Gregory L. Fenves declared that his wife Carmel had contracted SARS-CoV-2 after a trip to New York. In an open letter to UT staff, faculty, and students, he said his wife started showing flu-like symptoms after their trip, during which they visited several ceremonies with alumni and students, and was tested positive for COVID-19.
Both Gregory, his wife, and an additional family member are in self-isolation, and the president has advised community members to follow CDC preventative measures against the spread of the virus. 2 days later, Gregory tested negative for coronavirus. From March 15th, 2020, he has no flu-like symptoms but will continue to self-isolate for 14 days.
