He started his career as an actor and dancer, notably emerging in the hugely successful 1961 film West Side Story as Indio, one of the Sharks. Trikonis also danced with Debbie Reynolds and Grover Dale to the frantic “He’s My Friend” in 1964’s The Unsinkable Molly Brown.

Trikonis got his second-biggest exposure in front of any audience on December 3, 1968, as one of two main (out of five) male dancers who do Elvis Presley’s choreography. He sings a Gospel medley as part of a widely watched NBC-TV Special entitled “Elvis”.

Trikonis starred as Indio in West Side Story. West Side Story was a 1961 American musical romantic drama film directed by Robert Wise and Jerome Robbins, written by Ernest Lehman, and produced by Wise.

The film is an adaptation of the 1957 Broadway musical of the same title, which in turn was inspired by Shakespeare’s play Romeo and Juliet. It stars Natalie Wood, Richard Beymer, Russ Tamblyn, Rita Moreno, and George Chakiris and was photographed by Daniel L. Fapp in Super Panavision 70.
