Guy Burnet Interview
Pitch Perfect‘s Guy Burnet Shares the Hilarious Joke Rebel Wilson Played on Him
This Friday, December 22nd, Pitch Perfect 3 comes to theaters with the usual gang of pitches, plus a couple of newbies. One newcomer is the charming British actor Guy Burnet, who has a recurring role on The Affair and will star in the upcoming film Jacob’s Ladder. For Pitch Perfect, however, Burnet acts alongside Anna Kendrick as DJ Khaled’s music production manager. To find out more about the on-set shenanigans, T&C caught up with the leading man who dished about on-set pranks, a “DJ Khaled dictionary,” and his experience with the Barnet Bellas.
You entered into a well-established franchise — were you intimidated? What kind of welcome did you receive?
I was truly welcomed with open arms. They were all really bloody nice!
What was the overall dynamic like on set?
It was one of the most enjoyable experiences I’ve ever had. It was completely female-driven: female director, female ensemble, and female writers. All of these elements, and here I am, just a guy helping them and supporting this female-driven story. And I loved it.
And these are very funny women. Was there anyone that made you laugh the most or anyone you specifically connected with?
Individually they’re each hysterical in completely different ways. You have Anna Kendrick who is super smart, ironic funny, with a very dry English sense of humor, which I related to. You have Hanna May who also had this dry wit. And Rebel Wilson had this kind of mischievous sense of humor to her.
On April Fools Day, there was a situation where I came into work, and outside of the makeup trailer, everybody was around this body lying on the ground with blood coming out. And I moved people, and I saw that it’s Rebel lying on the floor with blood coming down her leg. She had fallen down the stairs.
What? That’s horrible!
She was crying, and I was like, “Don’t worry, don’t worry, it’s going to be all right.” I was then screaming at people, “Get an ambulance!” And the funny thing is, as I’m trying to calm her down, there was a medic that was just standing there, and I got into a fight with him, saying, “What are you standing there for? Help her out!” After five minutes of me trying to sort out the situation, they go, “April Fools!” That sums up Rebel’s personality.
And for this movie, you worked quite a lot with DJ Khaled. Were there any great one-liners from him on or offset?
When I knew it was going to be DJ Khaled, I watched every YouTube clip of him and everything he’s done in the past. He is so specific. And he’s so individual, that you have to be very prepared — especially in this improv-heavy film. When he turned up, I prepared a whole dictionary of words and language that I saw DJ Khaled use because he literally has his own language.
Give me an example?
We’d be in a scene, and before we’d start shooting I’d say, “Hey, you’re a lion.” And he’d say, “I’m a lion shooting through the stars like a rocket.” And he would riff off these words…
Were you acquainted with a cappella singing before signing on to this movie?
When I did get the job, I hadn’t seen any of the movies. I went back and I watched the first two, and I loved them. They didn’t take themselves too seriously, and they communicated to an audience that hadn’t been communicated to before.
I also read Anna’s statement about her reluctance to make this a romantic storyline.
Anna and I agreed that we didn’t want to do a cliché romantic story. We wanted to try and do something where they have chemistry, but we don’t know if they’re going to be together. The important element is that there isn’t a blurred line between the romance and the business storyline. It’s also relevant to the current climate.
It was definitely the right move.
It’s also a lot more interesting. It’s a chemistry that is running, but it isn’t in your face — it’s not like they’re going to hook up.
And on a lighter note, if you could actually manage any band in the world, who would it be?
I’m a big fan of old school hip-hop—people like Biggie Smalls. I love Frank Sinatra, Elvis, and I’m crazy for David Bowie. If I were my character in real life, though, I’d probably manage the Rolling Stones.
