Buckingham never studied music, his was an in-born gift, By the age of 13, he developed an interest in folk music. Inspired by banjo methods, he Perfectioned the energetic style of the Kingston Trio. From 1966 to 1971, Buckingham played psychedelia and folk-rock with the group The Fritz Rabyne Memorial Bandin of the San Francisco Bay Area as a bass player and vocalist.
